as a two year old including setting six New Track Records. Warren believed she was the best runner he ever raced. She was sold and Flit became a broodmare for Warren. Swamp Angel’s daughter Leolita was a stakes winner in the 1951 Kansas Futurity and the 1952 Kansas Derby. Swamp Angel also produced Leo Chico, a stakes placed runner with a third in the 1952 Rocky Mountain QHA Futurity, and Leo Joe - who were full brothers and they earned their ROM on the track.
When Warren was building his broodmare band, he bought three daughters of King P-234. They were 89’er, Sorrel Sue and Betty Warren. 89’er was the only one
of the three to earn an ROM on the track. Her dam was High Glee by My Pardner
by Uncle Jimmie Gray TB by Bonnie Joe. Bonnie Joe was the sire of Joe Blair, the sire of Joe Reed P-3. The dam of My Pardner was Mollie Echols by Brown Billy, a son of Pancho, a son of Old Billy. 89’er was bred
to Leo to produce Mr 89’er (ROM), Miss Sabre (ROM), Whimper (ROM), Leo Bob (ROM), 89’ers Boy (ROM), Sooner Leo (ROM) and Mora Leo (ROM). Leo Bob was the winner of the 1952 Rocky Mountain Futurity. Miss Saber was second in the 1953
Rocky Mountain QHA Derby and third in the 1952 Southwestern Futurity.
Sorrel Sue was out of the Tommy King Mare whose pedigree is unknown. Sorrel Sue was the dam of six racing ROM with three of them sired by Leo, including Mac Lee, a two-time stakes winner in the Rocky Mountain QHA Derby and the Kansas Derby. The other two ROM earners were Lemac and Leonella.
Betty Warren was out of Kitty Rose, who was sired by Billy Anson by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. The dam of Kitty Rose was a Ketchum Mare, breeding unknown. Betty Warren was the dam of 12 starters with eight ROM including five of them sired by Leo. They were Leola, winner of the Oklahoma Futurity, the Rocky Mountain QHA Futurity in 1950 and the Rocky Mountain QHA Derby in 1951; and Sooner Lady, who
was stakes placed with a third in the 1957 Oklahoma QH Exhibitor’s Association Futurity. The other three ROM earners were Idaho Betty Lee, Leoren and Soonerette.
Oncita was another one of those South Texas bred mares to enter the Warren broodmare band. She was an unraced daughter of Band Play by Band Time, a Thoroughbred by High Time by Ultimus,
and Oncita’s dam was Onza Garcia by Old Tuerto by Hickory Bill by Peter McCue. The dam of Onza Garcia was Azteca by Little Joe. Oncita produced only two foals by Leo. Leocita was one of her three ROM earners
as well as a stakes finalist in the 1957 Rocky Mountain QHA Futurity and the 1958 Rocky Mountain QHA Derby.
Beginning with Lena Horn and ending with Oncita, we see that their pedigrees were based primarily on Peter McCue, the South Texas Billy horses and they both have ties to Old Billy. Little Joe, Zantanon and Grano de Oro were associated with Ott Adams, a breeder of South Texas racehorses who became noted as a breeder of “short
