Corralito Steak House Stakes (R)
B4 Farms LLC’s Bye Bye Matty P assumed a short lead at the head of the stretch and held on at the wire to win the January 9, 6-furlong Corralito Steak House Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds at Sunland Park.
Trained by Todd Fincher and sent to post as the 3-2 second choice in the field of 10, Bye Bye Matty P defeated 16-1 longshot Massive Roar by a nose in 1:09.75. Alfredo Juarez rode Bye Bye Matty P to the bay Attila’s Storm gelding’s second career stakes win.
Bye Bye Matty P was bred by R.D. Hubbard. His sire, the late Attila’s Storm, was a graded stakes winning Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat. Raced in five states from 2004-07, including New York and California, Attila’s Storm won two stakes and earned $534,983 from 18 starts, and his five wins included the 2007 Toboggan Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. He also ran second in the 2005 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Attila’s Storm has sired 24 official black- type stakes winners and the earners of more than $15.1 million from 12 crops, including multiple stakes winners Bella Dona, Flight Song, and Stormin The Jewels. The stallion died on June 23, 2021, following colic surgery.
Bye Bye Matty P’s dam, the winning Kentucky-bred Danzig mare Kizka, has foaled six winners from eight starters, including Plea
Agreement, a half-brother to Bye Bye Matty P who won the 2014 Budweiser Special Stakes at Albuquerque Downs. The gelding’s second dam, Miss Demure (IRE), was a daughter
of the Blushing Groom (FR) stallion Shy Groom who won the 1988 Update Lowther Stakes (G2) at York Racecourse in England and produced Royal Shyness (GB), a Grade 1-placed half-sister to Miss Demure who won the 1999 Great Lady M. Handicap at Hollywood Park.
Bye Bye Matty P’s traces back to his fourth dam, Lowna (GB), a stakes-winning daughter of Princely Gift (GB). A 1965 foal, Lowna foaled two stakes winners, including Grade 3 winner Gospill Hill (GB).
Bye Bye Matty P made his debut with a wire-to-wire, 2 1/4-length victory in last year’s 4 1/2-furlong, $58,000 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) at SunRay Park. All told, the gelding has won three of five races, and the $60,000 winner’s share of the Corralito Steak House Stakes purse pushed his earnings to $124,175. He also was a finalist in the August 16, $115,000 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Wheres Brayden, the 13-10 favorite, finished third, 2 3/4 lengths behind Bye Bye Matty P. Reads Pet Zenon, Lead Monterey, Lonzo Who, Bodie Got Gold, Jeeps Stride,
Mark’s Warrior, and Charlie Dynasty completed the order of finish.
Runner-up Massive Roar is a homebred dark bay or brown son of the Afleet Alex stallion Sway Away campaigned by The Quarter Company LLC. The gelding has banked $35,603 from four outs, and he broke his maiden in a 6-furlong maiden-claiming ($15,000) race for New Mexico-bred 2-year- olds at Zia Park on October 4.
Wheres Brayden was coming off of a Zia
Park fall meet during which he won two stakes, including the December 13, $100,000 Steve Prather Stakes (R). A homebred son of the Artie Schiller stallion Artful Run, the bay gelding has won three of eight starts and has earned $178,505 for his owner, R. Dwain Yarbar.
