                 Jamison Memorial Handicap (R)
Delbert Too outran his 31-1 odds to
win the January 30, $100,000 Jamison Memorial Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Rigo Sarmiento for owner and trainer Filiberto Quiroz, Delbert Too crossed the wire a half of a length in front of Tucum while covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.19. The 4-year-old bay son of Marking earned $60,000 from his second career stakes victory.
Delbert Too was claimed by Quiroz for $15,000 at Zia Park on November 16. The gelding was bred by Fred Alexander, and he is one of
four official black-type stakes winners from 35 starters sired by Marking, a 12-year-old winning Kentucky-bred son of the A.P. Indy stallion Bernardini and the multiple graded stakes winning Street Cry (IRE) mare Seventh Street. Racing from 2015-16, Marking earned $426,200 from eight starts, and he ran second in Runhappy’s 2015 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Marking has sired the earners of more than $1.4 million from three crops, including multiple stakes winner Slammed and stakes winners One Mark and Mark’s Warrior. A half-brother to 2019 Demoiselle Stakes (G2) winner Lake Avenue, the stallion
is owned by Fred Alexander and Todd Fincher,
and he stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Delbert Too is also one of three winners from four starters produced by On Stride, a 14-year-old
winning daughter of the Silver Ghost stallion Ghostly Moves. His second dam, the unplaced Kentucky-bred Master Derby mare Be Mindful, foaled two stakes winners, both of whom were half-siblings to On Stride -- Bethreefullpockets, a son of Full Choke who won four stakes in New Mexico in 1999, and Pocketfullapozzies, a Full Choke filly who won the 2000 Copper Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred juveniles at Sunland Park.
Delbert Too’s third dam, the unraced Better Bee mare Bet Her Name, produced three stakes-placed runners, including Dusty Heart, a half-sister to Be Mindful who ran second in the 1984 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park, and Win Dusty Win, a half- sister to Be Mindful and runner-up in the 1986 Miller High Life Cradle Stakes (G3) at River Downs in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Delbert Too traces back to his fourth dam, Name It, an unplaced daughter of the Heliopolis stallion Summer Tan who foaled multiple stakes winner Clemanna.
Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, the gelding has banked $251,249 from 16 outs, and his four wins include the 2020 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Following a stewards’ inquiry, Tucum was disqualified from second and placed third. Evacuee was placed second and was followed officially
by Tucum, On A Warpath, Stormin Fast, West
Dawn, Izeright, Storm Bayou and Jet N G. Official runner-up Evacuee is a dark bay
or brown 5-year-old son of the Pulpit stallion Abstraction owned by B4 Farms LLC. A $30,000 yearling purchase at the 2018 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the gelding has won three of 20 races -- including the 2019 New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity (R)
at Albuquerque Downs -- and the $20,000 runner-up share of the Jamison Memorial Stakes purse pushed his bankroll to $260,989.
Tucum is a homebred 4-year-old dark bay
or brown son of the Holy Bull stallion King Bull. The gelding has won three of nine races
-- including last year’s 6-furlong, $100,000 New Mexico Cup Derby Championship (R) at Zia Park -- and he has earned $119,749 for his owner, Tucumcari Thoroughbreds.
