Albert & Henry Dominguez Mem. H. (R)
Sea Emperor, a 7-year-old son of Roman Emperor, extended his win streak to 3 races with a neck victory in the Feb. 27, 1 1/16-mile Albert and Henry Dominguez Memorial Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.
Prepped by Jose Gonzalez Jr. for Dr. Miguel Gallegos’ Gallegos del Norte Racing, Sea Emperor stopped the timer in 1:44.08 while earning his first career stakes win. Luis Fuentes rode the homebred dark bay or brown gelding.
Sea Emperor is one of 16 winners from 26 starters sired by Roman Emperor, a stakes- winning Kentucky-bred son of the Unbridled stallion Empire Maker. Campaigned in four states from 2007-08, Roman Emperor banked $166,803 from nine races and his three wins included the 2008 Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland.
A half-brother to two stakes winners, including Grade 3 winner English Affair, Roman Emperor has sired the earners of more than $842,000 from seven crops, including 2014 George Maloof Futurity (R) winner Burning It.
Sea Emperor is also one of six winners from eight starters foaled by Sea Sis, an unplaced California-bred daughter of the Believe It stallion Al Mamoon. The gelding is a half-brother
to La Sorpresa, the winner of the $100,000 Sydney Valentini Handicap (R) at Sunland Park from 2010 and 2011, and Rey Del Mar, the winner of the $37,000 New Mexico State
Fair Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs in 2013.
Sea Emperor’s second dam, the winning Desert Wine mare Sea Caylee Run, produced four winners from nine starters, including Sea To See, a full brother to Sea Sis who won two stakes in California from 2001-03, including the 2003 TVG Khaled Stakes (R) for California-breds at Hollywood Park. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Seadell, an unraced daughter of the Dan Cupid stallion Sea-Bird and a half-sister to four stakes winners, including Grade 2 winner Quick Card.
Sea Emperor was stretching out in distance off of his neck victory in a 6 1/2-furlong, $29,000 starter-optional claiming race for New Mexico- breds on February 13. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, he has won 11 of 28 starts -- including seven of nine at Sunland Park -- and the
$60,000 winner’s share of the Albert and Henry Dominguez Memorial Handicap purse bumped his earnings to $209,913, of which $142,736 has been banked at Sunland Park.
Sea Emperor’s resume includes a third-place finish, 4 1/2 lengths behind winner Next Affair, in the 2020 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Sea Emperor was sent to post at odds of 7-1 in the full field of 12. Jet N G finished second and was followed by Cheese Tray, 2-1 favorite Evacuee, Effort N Results, Delbert Too, Shining Source,
Masterclass, West Dawn, Storm Bayou, Next Affair and Izeright.
Jet N G is a homebred dark bay or brown
son of the Old Trieste stallion Mr. Trieste owned by Maurcenia Cross of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. A full brother to 2011 Dine Stakes (R) runner-up Numberoneson, the 7-year-old gelding has won seven of 37 races -- including last year’s 1-mile, $100,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park -- and the $20,000 runner-up share of the purse increased his bankroll to $350,033.
Cheese Tray is a homebred 4-year-old Attila’s Storm gelding racing for J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. A half-brother to the stakes- placed Southwestern Heat gelding Road To Heat, Cheese Tray has won three of 15 outs and has earned $132,786.
