A $10,000 claimer during the 2021 Zia Park fall meet, Jim Volk’s Jet Set Warrior outran his 9-1 odds to win the February 27, $100,000 Red Hedeman Mile Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred sophomore thoroughbreds at Sunland Park.
Jet Set Warrior covered his 1-mile trip in 1:38.78 and the homebred bay gelding’s margin of victory was a neck from 2-1 second choice Massive Roar. Miguel Fuentes Jr. rode Jet Set Warrior for trainer Joel Marr.
Jet Set Warrior became the first stakes winner from 13 starters sired by Archwarrior, a winning Kentucky-bred son of the Kris S. stallion Arch and a half-brother to stakes winners Return To Paradise and Coya. Racing in New York in 2012, Archwarrior earned $68,000 from two starts
and he ran fourth in Shanghai Bobby’s Grade 1 Foxwoods Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park.
Jet Set Warrior is also one of two winners from four starters foaled by Jet Set Lass, a winning California-bred daughter of the Siberian Express stallion In Excess (TB). His second dam, the winning Phone Trick mare Loma Linda Lass, ran third in the 1999 Lady Morvich Handicap during the San Mateo County Fair meet at Bay Meadows.
Jet Set Warrior’s third dam, Mayflower Lass, was a Florida-bred daughter of the Northern Dancer stallion Pilgrim who won three stakes in California from 1991-92, including the 1992 Miss America Handicap
(G3) at Golden Gate Fields. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Flower Vase (IRE), a winning daughter of the Bold Bidder stallion Auction Ring who ran second in the 1984 Miami Beach Stakes at Hialeah Park and was a half-sister to Croftito (IRE), a listed stakes winner in France in 1988.
Jet Set Warrior ended his 2-year-old campaign with a convincing 8 1/4-length victory in a 6 1/2-furlong race for New Mexico-bred $10,000 maiden claimers on December 12. The gelding has won two of seven races, and the $60,000 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes score increased his bankroll to $80,331, of which $66,520 has been pocketed from two outs this season.
At Ruidoso Downs last summer, Jet Set Warrior was a finalist in the 5 1/2-furlong, $116,000 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred juveniles.
Jet Set Warrior returned a $21.40 win mutuel and teamed with runner-up Massive Roar for a $2 exacta dividend of $84. Diabolical Storm, the 2-1 favorite in the field of eight,
ran third, 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner, to complete a $190.40 ($1) trifecta payoff.
Wheres Brayden finished fourth and was followed by Bodie Got Gold, Lonzo Who, Reads Pet Zenon and Jeeps Stride.
Massive Roar is a homebred dark bay or brown son of the Afleet Alex stallion Sway
Away owned by The Quarter Company LLC. The runner-up to Bye Bye Matty P in the January 9, 6-furlong Corralito Steak House Stakes (R), Massive Roar is a half-brother to the stakes-placed Include filly Group Text. The gelding has won one of six starts and the $20,000 runner-up share of the Red Hedeman Mile Stakes purse pushed his earnings to $58,863, of which $43,260 has been banked from three races this season.
Diabolical Storm is a homebred gray or roan Attila’s Storm gelding racing for Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant and Derrol Hubbard, and he was coming off of a nose victory in a 1-mile, $33,000 non-winners-of-two route for New Mexico-breds on February 1. Diabolical Storm has won two of four outs and has banked $52,600.
