winners. Fitting Celebration, Sunnysyde’s third dam, was a graded stakes winner and the 2004 Broodmare of the Year. Fitting Celebration’s foals include Champion Brimmerton, multiple graded stakes winner Gone Celebrating, and stakes winner Mitford. Cox has bred nearly the entire family.
Ponce has noticed a similarity among Havanah Goodtime’s three runners.
“They are all the same, real calm in the stall,” the trainer said. “Once they go out on the track, they are showoffs. I don’t know what it is about that mare that produces the same thing in each horse.”
Sunnysyde earned $430,433 for the Futurity. Havanah Goodtime has total progeny earnings of $1,849,745 for just the three runners.
Trial winner Wokatee On Fire (Highest Fire-Wokatee) finished second under James Flores for owner Servando Montemayor and trainer Bobby Martinez.
Ponce also trained third-place Unlymited (Corona Cartel-All About Ease), who had Manuel Gutierrez in the irons for owner Bobby D. Cox and Kristen Paredes.
“I don’t think he would have beaten Sunnysyde,” Ponce said of Unlymited. “But, I think we could have run second if he didn’t get bumped.”
Little Kool Belle (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Little Kool Barbie) finished fourth, followed by Symbol Of Faith (Tac It Like A Man-Answer The Dream), Aqua Flash (First Moonflash-Aquafina), Slayer (High Rate Of Return-Shiv Katall), VF Jedi Returns (High Rate Of Return-Corona Couture) and Jakes Baby Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jakes Charming Jody). Special Candy High (High Rate Of Return-Special Candy Paint) was injured during the race and did not finish.
