Julianna sold King Corona as a yearling. “He was our first big-time seller,” Bennie Ray says. “We’d sold a couple of yearlings for about $100,000, but never for $500,000 until him. He was the one who really made us stand out at the sales.”
Corona Chick went on to produce 16 foals (14 starters), including seven winners, four stakes winners. The mare is the #2 all-time leading dam of money earners at $3,625,157.
Corona Chick retired from breeding in 2011 and passed away at age 24 in 2013.
Another great Cross Triangle producer was Higher Fire, whom the Cross Triangle lost earlier this year. The 15-year-old Walk Thru Fire mare out of Higher Math by Raise A Secret, produced One
Famous Eagle daughter Fly Baby Fly, the 2017 All American Futurity winner and the year’s top earner.
Julianna’s broodmare band also includes the great Heartswideopen, who won the Grade 1 All American and Ruidoso futurities in 2007 and Rainbow and Ruidoso derbies in 2008, and placed second in the All American Derby, with career earnings of $1,885,283 — and Apollitical Time, an earner of $904,242 who amassed a race record of
14 wins from 35 starts with seven seconds and five thirds. Among Apollitical Time’s notable wins are the Grade 1 Governor’s Cup Derby, Los Alamitos Super Derby, Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap and Los Alamitos Invitational Championship.
These great mares contributed to the Cross Triangle’s achieving high-seller status multiple times at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
“A tip here and a tip there adds up to a lot of wisdom.”
Beside 4-time Champion Corona Cash, Corona Chick has produced the likes of . . .
Bennie Greathouse and Julianna Hawn Holt with Champion broodmare Grade 1 All American Futurity and Derby qualifier,
sire Valiant Hero.
Captain Courage.
A Dash Of Sweet Heat was the $650,000 high seller at the 2011 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Julianna bought her back for her broodmare band.
Mighty Corona, ranked 20th in earnings in 2008 with $309,216 in two seasons.
