The photo on page 115 shows 1958 World Champion Mr Bar None (Three Bars TB-Murl L, Moco Burnett) with Richard Jeffers, son of breeders Oscar “June” and Zelma Jeffers. June is quoted in the 1967 stallion issue of the Quarter Racing Record about the morning in 1955 of Mr Bar None’s foaling, “I never saw anything like him. He was the most magnificent looking colt I have ever seen.” The colt began racing at two and was retired after his sophomore year. In that short time, Mr Bar None accumulated $72,125 in earnings with 22 victories from 36 starts, including wins in the Ruidoso Derby, PCQHRA Futurity & Derby and Shue Fly Stakes, to name just a few. In 1957, he set a New Track Record for 300 yards at Garfield Downs and was named Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. In 1958, Mr Bar None added the titles of World Champion, Champion Stallion and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.
After a successful career on the track, Mr Bar None went on to sire money earners of over $1.1 million. Among his top runners are 2-time Champion Bar None Doll, who set a New Track Record for 330 yards at Garfield Downs, Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Bayou Bar, who set four New Track Records for 220, 250, 300 and 400 yards, and Champion Mr Juniper Bar. Mr Bar None was also a successful broodmare sire, including the dams of 2-Time Champion Mighty Deck Three, who was bred by Richard Jeffers; 2-Time Champion Flight 109; and Native Empress. To add to his success as a sire, Mr Bar None has also sired horses such as NFR qualifiers The Bar None Quest and Mr Bar None Cactus. Mr Bar None died in 1982 at the age of 27, and he took his place in the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2014.
This year’s Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 winner is Chance To Excel. In 1968, the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 was known as the Pomona Quarter Horse Futurity. Prior to 1970, it was known as the PCQHRA Futurity. In 1971-78, it was called the Pomona Futurity. The Ed Burke Mil- lion Futurity-G1 didn’t become a graded stakes race until 1983.
