One of the ongoing themes that
has been repeated in many of the interviews and topics that I have been
of races like the Pimlico Futurity, Florida Derby and the Jersey Stakes. He became a leading sire with his get including the Genter-bred Smile, the 1986 Eclipse Champion Sprinter. The dam of Smile was Sunny Smile, who was bred by Genter. One of the foals of Smile was
I’ll Get Along, bred by Genter. Her dam was Don’t Worry About Me, also bred
by Genter. I’ll Get Along was the dam
of Smarty Jones, winner of the 2004 Kentucky Derby-G1, Preakness Stakes-G1 and Arkansas Derby-G1 with a second
in the Belmont Stakes. He was the 2004 Eclipse Champion Three-Year-Old Colt.
Genter consigned Sparkling Tip to the Florida Quarter Horse Association Sale in 1967. She was purchased by Lindsey D. Burbank, a dentist from Leesburg, Florida. Burbank wanted to get into Quarter Horse racing but didn’t have a lot of money to spend and so he did a lot of research to pick a good prospect. They found Sparkling Tip. He told Lynn Jank in the Speedhorse story, “In My Fashion” the following. “My wife, Linda, and I have always believed that when you really want something,
Sparkling Tip was foaled in 1966 in Florida and her breeder was Frances A. Genter. Mrs. Genter was a successful owner and breeder who may best be known as the owner of Unbridled, winner of the 1990 Kentucky Derby-G1. The part that sets this derby win apart is the famous video
of her trainer Carl Nafzger calling the race for the 92-year-old owner, who couldn’t see the race because of poor eyesight. Unbridled went on to win 1990 Breeder’s Cup Classic and he was named the Eclipse Champion Three- Year-Old Colt. She bought Unbridled from his breeder Tartan Farms at the Tartan Farms/Nerud Dispersal as a weanling for $70,000.
Frances Genter, who raced her horses under the name Frances A. Genter Racing Stable Inc., was a successful breeder with horses like My Dear Girl, the 1959 Champion Two-year-Old Filly, another mare
she bought. This mare went on to produce for Genter horses such
as In Reality, a stakes winner
involved in in recent months has been the appreciation the industry has found for the power of the mare. It seemed that every time a discussion was taking place, the ongoing topic worked its way to the influence the mare has on her foals. This is an important topic as we enter the 2023 breeding season when planning our next crop of foals.
So, with that in mind, we will cover the history of one of the mares that was an early example of the power
a mare can have on Quarter Horse racing. Her name is Sparkling Tip,
a Quarter Horse mare with ties to a successful Thoroughbred racing and breeding program.
