Two years before James Streelman bought his first Quarter Horse, Special Effort won the 1981 All American Triple Crown. Now Streelman and William O. Dale, partners in Dutch Masters III, have the opportunity for their Jess Savin Candy to become only the second to accomplish that prestigious feat.
In 1981, the Triple Crown consisted of the Kansas Futurity, Rainbow Futurity, and All American Futurity. The Kansas was renamed the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, and Jess Savin Candy collected that one June 13. He added the Rainbow Futurity-G1 on July 25.
It wasn’t an easy win, especially given the weather. Rain pelted Ruidoso Downs, and the first three races on the card had to be canceled.
“When we got to the racetrack, we sat in the car for about 45 minutes because it was raining so hard,” said Streelman. “You watch the tractors all afternoon go back and forth pushing water and mud this way and that way, and you realize that the weather isn’t going to get any better.”
