 Prairie Meadows Gold Futurity
ONE FAMOUS CANDY
by Jess Johnson
One Famous Candy continued her win streak in the inaugural running of the $182,275 Prairie Meadows Gold Futurity on
July 11.
The filly is now undefeated in three life-
time starts for owner Thomas Scheckel.
“She really grew up and filled out and did just
great today,” said Scheckel following the win. Trained by Jason Olmstead and ridden
by Edwin Escobedo, One Famous Candy was the third fastest qualifier coming into the finals after breaking last in the June 21 trials and fly- ing home for the win. A simi- lar race was seen in the finals with nearly an identical time, covering 330 yards in :16.717 for a 99 speed index.
Scheckel, who has been racing horses for eight years, purchased the PV Quarter Horse Farms LLC bred filly
Prairie Meadows Gold Derby
for $24,000 at the Ruidoso Yearling Sale in September at the Lazy E Ranch. A steal of a buy, One Famous Candy nearly tripled her purchase price in this out alone, taking home $72,910 for the first place finish.
PV Quarter Horse Farm LLC bred One Famous Candy out of Send Me A Candy Tree, who won the Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1, Lubbock Stakes-G3
and Texas Classic Juvenile Invitational. The mare is a sibling to seven blacktype winners. Send Me A Candy Tree has produced three win- ners from four starters.
The filly’s second dam is Remington Park Futurity-G1 winner Send Me The Candy. She has produced 18 winners from 30 starters, including four stakes winners.
In the lead for the first two calls over the fast track
was Last Tres Seis (Tres Seis-Last Shall Be First) ridden by Stormy Smith. Trained by John Hammes, the gelding couldn’t hold and finished second for owner Charles Mitcheck.
Second fastest qualifier Jess Southard (One Sweet Jess-Southard Cartel), trained by Jason Olmstead for owner/breeder Jo Rice, was rid- den to third place by Brett Birzer. The gelding finished second in his June 21 trial.
Saints New Weapon (Corona Cartel- Louisiana Corona) and Im a Fancee Chik (Im A Fancy PYC-Dixie Marrone) completed the order of finish. Saints New Weapon finished first in his June 21 trial for the fastest qualify- ing time.
In a disappointing turn of events, Dun With Politics, U Go Gal, What You Know, Five Bar Barbie and Political Fire were all scratched.

       KOOL AND FABULOUS

Living up to her name, Kool And Fabulous, brought home a heartwarming win for owner Brenda Reiswig in the inaugural
$118,600 Prairie Meadows Gold Derby on July 11.
Kool And Fabulous, the fastest qualifier coming into the finals, broke on top and dominated the field of horses through every call, covering 350 yards in :17.526 to earn a 98 speed index. She banked $47,440 for the stakes win.
Reiswig gave praise to jockey Edwin Escobedo, who rode Kool And Fabulous to the win. “He just does such a good job and he’s such a nice young man,” said Reiswig. “He has a great career ahead of him.”
The bay filly, trained by Jason Olmstead, has won three of four starts this year and was on the board in six of seven starts last year.
Reiswig bred Kool And Fabulous out of winner One Kool Wagon. The mare has pro- duced three winners from four starters. Kool And Fabulous is her second stakes winner and top earner. Her other stakes winner is Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile winner One Kool Dreamer.
“This win is really special to us because we lost her (Kool And Fabulous’) mother earlier this year,” stated Reiswig following the trophy
presentation.
Reiswig plans to carry
on the female family of One Kool Wagon in daughters Kool And Fabulous and One Kool Dreamer, who also won a race this past week.
A photo finish for the eight horses following Kool And Fabulous across the finish line kept the crowd in suspense. In the end, it was another Reiswig owned filly, Shadi Lady (Valiant
Hero-Seis The Royal Cash), who placed second with Alfredo Triana Jr. in the irons. Trained by Clint Crawford, Shadi Lady broke sixth and fell behind slightly, but rallied and caught the field for the place spot.
Not A Secret (Hez Our Secret-Call As Maybe) gained the most ground from the start, breaking last from the gates over a fast track and finishing third. Not A Secret, rid- den by Jonathan Dominguez, is owned by Michael Teel and trained by Charlton Hunt.
EC Ante Up (Apollitical Jess-Fast Prize Zoom), Purty Darn Quick (Jess Louisiana Blue-Now Margaret), My Midnight Candy (Jess Good Candy-Midnight Sunlight), Wieburg (Ivory James-Hollie Jollie), Bayou A Cartel (Corona Cartel-Louisana Corona) and Tres Evidence (Tres Seis-Kpax) followed. VF Pillow Talk was scratched.
