CIRCLE CITY

Dr. Ed Allred has bred so many good runners that he sometimes has to compete against horses he bred but does not own. That happened
in the $154,800 Vessels Maturity-G1 at Los Alamitos on July 3, when Allred’s homebred Circle City defeated Made Over, bred by Allred but owned by Junior’s Quarter Horses Inc.
Circle City went off as the 2-1 favorite in the 400-yard maturity, with Victor Salazar aboard. Circle City broke well from
the 8-post, but a couple of
runners toward the inside took over. Circle City put on a big effort at the end to engulf the leaders and score by 3/4-length in :19.603.
“When he broke like
he did, I was pretty happy because he usually finishes extremely strong,” said Scott Willoughby, who trains Circle City for Allred. Circle City has won seven of 18
Gordon Mobley Futurity
races, including last year’s Golden State Derby-G2. He finished second in the 2019 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and third in the Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3.
Willoughby attributed some of the gelding’s losses to less-than-perfect starts.
“Tonight he was focused, looked down at the racetrack, and never messed up,” the trainer said. “He left there running, and when he breaks, he
is extremely tough to outrun.” Circle City gets peri-
odic vacations at the Steve Charles Training Center in Romoland, California.
“Steve does a great job for us,” stated the conditioner. “I’ve turned all my good horses out there when they need a little break.”
Allred bred Circle City out of stakes-winner Moonlight Corona, a half-sister to Champion Your First Moon.
The mare has produced 19 winners from 22 starters, including multiple graded stakes winner Nomadic.
Cruz Mendez piloted Made Over (Favorite Cartel-Make Over) to second for trainer Jose Flores. Made Over also finished second in the 2020 A Ransom Handicap. Redneck Ryan (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy) ran third under jockey Oscar Peinado owners Javier Chavez and Juan Humberto Moya and for trainer Jaime Gomez. The 7-year-old earlier this year finished second in the Kaweah Bar.
Followed by Spirit Foose (Foose-Beauty Secrets), Cattail Cove (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella), Mental Error (Favorite Cartel-Iba Quick Chick). Eagles Fly Higher (One Famous Eagle-Lone Bet), Mister Tornado (Sports Cartel- Spanish Sola Mark) & Cartel Rocks (Five Bar Cartel-Snow Rock). Up Is Up was scratched.
Runner-up High Rolling Seize (Seize The Win-Crossing The Brazos) just missed for owner/breeder Glenn Graff and trainer Matt Frazier. The bay gelding was an impressive winner of his trial dash. FE Stone Crusher (Brimmstone-Luella Joy) and jockey Samuel Mendez finished third for owner Deborah Smith and trainer Randy Smith. The sor-
rel gelding finished second behind Botticelli Beach in his trial.
Exosphere (Jess Zoomin-Phat Willie Sister), ER Stone Chargin (Brimmstone-Stel Chargin), Clovis Two Sox (Escondido Beach-La Una Viva) followed. DQ’s from 5th to 7th for interference was Jesses Beach (Escondido Beach-Jess Alive Bully), then Nachor Favorite (Habits Secret-Eyes A Favorite), Krystal Stone (Brimmstone-Bluesy Krystal), and Party Time Beach (Escondido Beach-Silly Chix).

Botticelli Beach, a resounding winner of her July 3 trial heat and the fastest qualifier for the $189,500 Gordon Mobley Futurity
at Indiana Grand on July 24, parlayed that victory into a determined score in the 12th running of the main event.
Making her third lifetime start, the preco- cious filly showed the way early in the 300-yard dash. Ridden by Jose Beltran, Botticelli Beach dueled the length of the lane with High Rolling Seize and jockey Shanley
Jackson. Unlike her facile
win in the trial, Botticelli
Beach had to dig deep to
fend off her rival this time
around, ultimately shrugging
off the challenge of High
Rolling Seize to prevail by a
neck in a game effort.
Bred in Indiana by Sheri Miller, Botticelli Beach received every call and stopped the timer in :15.640, earning
a 91 speed index for owner/
trainer Claudio Barraza. She is produced from the Genuine Botticelli mare Botticelli Shake. She now joins her sister Shakeitonthebeach
as winners of the Gordon Mobley Futurity. Shakeitonthebeach won the 2019 renewal of the race for trainer Randy Smith.
“I was super impressed with her today,” said Barraza, who purchased the gray filly through Miller Ranch’s Online Sale last fall. “She’s a little bigger than her sister (Shakeitonthebeach). In her
first race, I actually thought
she won that one too. It was so close. We have her paid into the Stallion Service Auction Futurity and a futurity at the end of the season, so we’ll try to be back for those.”
With the win, Botticelli Beach is now a winner in 2 of 3 starts—she finished second beaten just a nose in her May debut. The $104,225 winner’s share of the purse swelled her bankroll to $115,875.
