Anselmo Aguilar Payan Classic
LAFISHINGONABUGSMOON
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The fifth edition of the classic in honor of
Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán was held on June 27, for horses three years old and older born in Mexico. With the retirement of AS Macho from the Cuadra Falcon, there were five participants in this race which was contested
in 350 yards for a prize of $315,700 pesos ($15,753 U.S. approx.).
In this small group, Lafishingonabugsmoon caught the eye as this was his third attempt to capture this classic after having done so in 2019 and 2020. Also, present was Feuture Horse, the New Track Record holder at 300 yards who was making his return after eight months of absence from the track.
Showing off his experience, the race took place without incident between the competi- tors, but always under the dominance of the aforementioned Lafishingonabugsmoon (#3), who moved powerfully close on the inner rail. Feuture Horse (#6) tried from the right side of the group, but lost valuable time by deviat- ing to the external rail to finish a distant by 1 1/4-length behind the winner, who completed the sprint in :16.94 for a speed index of 101.
The responsibility for directing the winner was in charge of jockey Yair Daniel Báez Soto,
which he has been doing
since February 10, 2019, only
interrupted on one occasion on
May 5 of the same year when
Alejandro Gómez replaced
him. This pairing is responsible
for great achievements, which
include this Anselmo Aguilar
Payán Classic, as well as the
El Salvador Oñate (twice),
the Javier Rosique Palavicini,
the Bank Of America Mexico
Challenge Championship, the
Héctor Roldán Espinosa and
the Enrique Carrión Álvarez, as the main part of their 40 outings together at the track.
His successes also include three local speed records, two of them he holds at 350- and 440- yards, while his 300-yard record was surpassed by Feuture Horse on October 18, 2020, in that horse’s debut as a two-year-old in :14.80 as the current new mark.
The award in the winners’ circle was headed by Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán, who presented the trophies to Mr. Ramiro González Ozuna, breeder of the horse, and owner of Cuadra Los Gavilanes, as well as to trainer Rubén Romo García.
Additionally, the winner’s share of the purse was $157,850 pesos (approx. $7,876 U.S.).
Ramiro González Ozuna is also the owner of his sire, Nofishinonafullmoon, and his dam, A Special Ladybug by My Mr Special Bug,
who are the parents of the 8-year-old gelding.
Feuture Horse (Sea Horse Corona-Feature Bye Jess, Dashin Bye) finished in second place under the direc-
tion of Mario Alberto López Marmolejo. He is owned by the Cuadra Cartas Blancas, trained by José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona and was bred by Salomé Gallegos Fernández.
In third place was the colt Cherry Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-T Cherry Rose, Tailor This), ridden by Martín Hernández Bautista. He belongs to Rancho Don Memo, trained by Emmanuel Rivera Valdez and also raised by Salomé Gallegos Fernández.
Takin Six Glory (Glory Six-Takin Care) and Bye Bye Mom (Fearless Fritz-Warm Secret) completed the order of finish.
