SPEEDHORSE PAINT & APPALOOSA TRIPLE CROWN
RP Reckless Wire Leads In Points
by Gloria Dow
The Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown awards two Champions – the Triple Crown Champion for the horse that wins all three races, and the Triple Crown Hi-Point Champion for the horse with the most points having been paid in full and entered in all three trials and having competed in two of three trials. 2021 marks the tenth running of the Speedhorse sponsored event.
The first leg, the $294,075 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, was won by the Paint colt Smithworks (Painted Turnpike- Shesa Mighty Chick, Mighty Invictus QH) at Remington Park on May 29. Swithworks led from start to finish, scoring a head victory, with Capo Cabana in second and RP Reckless Wire in third.
The second leg, the $97,679 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, was won by Fabulous Turnpike (One Fabulous Eagle QH- Paint Me Turnpike, PYC Paint Your Wagon QH) at Fair Meadows on July 24. Fabulous Turnpike went wire-to-wire, winning by
1/2-length, with RP Reckless Wire in second and JS Runnin Wire in third. Thus, there will be no Triple Crown Champion.
This year, several horses will be vying for
the Triple Crown Hi-Point Champion award. Topping the ladder at this time with 17 points is the Paint filly RP Reckless Wire (CRM Livewire- RP Miss Reckless Dash QH, Reckless Dash). Bred and owned by Roy Kent Perkins, she is trained by Ray Enlow and was ridden by Cody Wainscott to third in the first leg and second in the second leg.
Three horses are in second place with 13 points each: Capo Cabana APHA (Capo De Capi QH-Mai Dashing Hero, The Dashing Hero), owned by Jay Ross, trained by Dee Keener and ridden by Jorge Torres (first leg) and Josh Romero (second leg); PFR Snowpike APHA (Painted Turnpike-Snowdacious, SM Country Snowman), owned by Painted Faith Racing, trained by Dee Keener and ridden by Benito Baca (first leg) and Josh Romero (second leg); and Smithworks, see
above, owned by Bryan Hawk, trained by Matt Whitekiller and ridden by Cody Smith.
Two additional horses are also in the running: Fabulous Turnpike APHA, see above, owned
by Estate of Nolan Pevehouse, trained by Dee Keener and ridden by Daniel Torres, with 10 points; and JS Runnin Wire APHA (CRM Livewire-Iwilliewantarunner QH, Willie Wanta Dash), bred and owned by Shirley Wheeler, trained by Dee Keener and ridden by Gonzalo Gutierrez, with 8 points.
The Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown Hi-Point Champion awards points according to finishing position in each race, and the winners will receive additional awards, including a $5,000 cash bonus.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the third and final leg of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown at Will Rogers Downs when the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity Championship trials are held on Oct. 23 and finals contested on Nov. 13.
