 Robert “Sonny” Edson Harris Passes Away
Robert “Sonny” Edson Harris passed away at the age of 100 on
July 12. Har-
ris grew up
in Louisiana, attended Loui- siana State University, and became
a part-time
owner of the
Blue Moon
Restaurant
and Night Club with his father. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Coast Guard until the end of the war. In the 1950’s, he and his father established a Black Angus cattle ranch, and then Harris became a Quarter Horse breeder at his Horseshoe Ranch. Among his top bred horses is Lightning Bar Jr, who earned
a superior in halter and sired 481 foals with 570 halter points, 298 performance points, two AQHA Champions and 92 race starters. Sonny became an approved judge for the American Quarter Horse, Palomino and Paint Horse Associations. He was a lifetime member and served as a Director and Di- rector Emeritus at the AQHA and was a longtime member of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Associa- tion. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LQHBA in 2015, and he and Lightning Bar Jr were inducted into the 2017 LQHBA Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Sybil, a daughter and son, and numerous other family members and friends.

The photo on page 207 shows Streakin Six (Easy Six-Miss Assured, Little Request TB) winning the1979 Rainbow Futurity. The colt scored the win for owner/breeder Tom L. Burnett Cattle Co., earning the win- ner’s share of the $422,815 purse. Don Farris was the trainer and Danny Cardoza was in the irons for the victory. Streakin Six finished second that year in the All American Futurity and went on to race for two more seasons, amassing a bank roll of $473,934 from a total of 19 starts. This includes another stakes win in New Mexico at The Downs at Albuquerque, where he beat the field in the 1980 running of the New Mexico State Fair Handicap. Streakin Six retired to the breeding shed as a multiple stakes winner with ten wins from 19 starts.
It was evident that Streakin Six would be a sire when from his first crop to race Sixy Chick was named the 1984 Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. In 1986, Streakin Six sired two additioinal Champions. Six For- tunes, the 1986 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt, went on to sire Champion Six To Five and AQHA Brood- mare of the Year Fortune Of Delight. Also in 1986, Sir Alibi was named the Champion Aged Stallion. Dean Miracle followed next as the 1998 Champion Aged Stallion, and Sterling Sport was crowned the 2003 Co- Champion Distance Horse. Streakin Six also sired the 1996 AQHA Broodmare of the Year in Shake Em Six. As a broodmare sire, Streakin Six is the sire of five Champions in AB What A Runner, Ketel Won, Roll Into Mischief and Shake The Bank. A sire of sires, Streakin Six went on to amass $17.2 million in earnings on the track with 75 blacktype earners, and he is also an all-time leading paternal and maternal grandsire of barrel money earners. Streakin Six was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2011.

Chickie Cherry Cola Dies
Chickie Cherry Cola (Chicks Beduino-No Policy Limit, Reb’s Policy TB) died after suffering from colic on June 15. The 2000 gray stallion was rushed to surgery but did not make it through the proce- dure. Chickie Cherry Cola earned $92,176 in his career, winning the 2002 Northwest Juvenile Chal- lenge-G3 at Les Bois Park. He also finished second in the Northwest Championship Challenge-G2 and Northwest Derby Challenge-G3, and third in the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G1 and Corona Chick Handicap-G3. Chickie Cherry Cola is the sire of over $875,000, including New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity-RG3 winner King Of Pop ($103,898). The stallion was bred by Pat Clark Living Trust and was owned by Saucer Five LP.
