The most visible descendant of Peggy Cooper is Easy Six by Easy Jet. He was out of Peggy Toro. This 1972 stallion was bred by the Burnett Ranch. He won the 1974 Sun Country Futurity and 1975 Kansas Derby, with thirds in the 1975 Sunland Park Derby and the Cypress Handicap. Easy Six had a short sire career with just 180 foals, 146 starters, 122 racing ROM, 14 stakes winners and earnings of $2,628,286. His leading money winner is Streakin Six with earnings of $473,934 winning races like
the 1979 Rainbow Futurity and 1980 New Mexico State Fair Handicap, with seconds in the 1979 All American Futurity and 1980 World’s Championship Classic.
It is through Streakin Six that the blood of Peggy Cooper flows in many of our runners today. He is the sire of horses that have won over $17 million including Streakin La Jolla, the sire of the multiple Champion Mr Jess Perry, the #3 All Time Leading Sire of money earners with earning of over $58 million. The get of Mr Jess Perry include AQHA Racing World Champion Apollitical Jess, a leading sire of over $41 million.
Try Six by Easy Six was bred by the Tom Burnett Cattle Company. He is the winner of the 1980 Firecracker Derby. His dam is Hot Kiss, a 1970 daughter of Azure Te. Hot
Stakes winner Peggy Te is the second stakes winner from Azure Te’s second crop and traces to her third dam Peggy Cooper.
New Track Records and was stakes placed in the Big Hat Purse Stakes. A third Phoebe C foal was Betsy Ross, registered as Betsy Ross Basset, who is the dam of Super Charge by none other than Depth Charge. Super Charge was the first horse to run AAA at the seven distances the AQHA recognized at that time.
Peggy Cooper was known as a great race mare. She even had a match race one time over an owner’s boots that were put up as a wager. Kenneth Gunther bet his boots that
a horse, owned by O. C. Glenn, would beat her. He left without his boots. Peggy Cooper
of Peggy N by Clabber and out of Peggy Cooper by Doc. Missile Princess was the dam of the Azure Te’s stakes winner Three Two Yankee. He was the winner of the 1978 Oklahoma Futurity. Ted Wells Jr. was the breeder of Three Two Yankee.
Peggy Te was the second stakes winner from the second crop of Azure Te. Her breeder was the S Lazy S Ranch of Lubbock, Texas. She was a multiple stakes finalist with her stakes win coming in the 1974 Armistice Futurity. She was out of Peggy’s Punkin by Double Joe H. Her dam Peggy N was by Clabber, and she was out of Peggy Cooper by Doc.
The beginning of the contribution
of Peggy Cooper to the Burnett Ranch breeding program begins with Chester Cooper of Roosevelt, Arizona. The history of breeder Chester Cooper was profiled in the September 1948 article “The Cooper Stock” by Craig Phillips in Texas Livestock Journal. Craig Phillips was a pen name for Nelson Nye, the writer and Quarter Horse historian. Cooper was a rancher that used his horses for ranch work and racing. One of his mares was Silver, a race mare and a roping horse. She was sired by Blue Eyes by Possum by Traveler and out of a Gardner Mare.
Silver was bred to Doc to produce Peggy C, or Peggy Cooper as she is registered, and
a mare that was registered as Phoebe C, or Duchess as she was known. Phoebe C was the dam of Prissy by Colonel Clyde, a race mare that set a New Track Record in the El Paso Derby going 350 yards in :18.2.
