Eddy County Stakes (R)
Indian Jack, a homebred son of Indian Firewater campaigned by C. Donnell Echols
of Lamesa, Texas, rallied to win the November 22, $140,000 Eddy County Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred juveniles at Zia Park.
Prepped by Joel Marr and sent to post as the 17-10 second choice in the full field of 12, Indian Jack covered his 1-mile & 70-yard trip in 1:46.37, and his winning margin was a half of a length from 15-1 longshot Jet N G. The $84,000 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes win pushed the dark bay or brown gelding’s bankroll to $106,700, all of which has been earned in New Mexico.
Indian Jack is one of three stakes winners from two crops sired by Indian Firewater, a 10-year-old Kentucky-bred son of 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie. Campaigned from 2009-12, Indian Firewater earned $339,242 from 25 races, and his two stakes wins included a wire-to-wire score in the 2011 San Fernando Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. Indian Firewater has sired 20 winners and the earners of more than $826,000.
Indian Jack is also one of two winners from as many starters produced by Jack’s Girl, an unraced 7-year-old daughter of the Dixieland Band stallion Firejack. The geld- ing’s second dam, Al’s Time, is a daughter of Thatsusintheolbean and a half brother
to E Bar Way, the winner of the 2011 Eddy County Stakes.
Indian Jack traces back to his fourth dam, Lady Lodger (GB), a daughter of Northern Dancer stallion Be My Guest who won the $150,000 Miss America Handicap (G3) at Golden Gate Fields in ’96. Lady Lodger was a half sister to Caitano (GB), a Group 1 stakes winner in Germany and Italy in 1997. Lady Lodger produced Pompeyano (IRE), a stakes winner in France in ’08.
Indian Jack was stretching out in distance off of his fifth-place run, 5 1/4 lengths behind winner P J’s Gold, in the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Championship (R) at Zia Park on October 29. The gelding has won two of four starts, including a 5 1/2-furlong, $26,500 maiden-special- weight sprint for state-breds on September 18.
Indian Jack returned a $5.40 win mutuel and teamed with Jet N G for a $2 exacta payoff of $91.80. Hennessy Express, a 23-1 longshot, finished third, 2 3/4 lengths behind Indian Jack, to complete a $527.40 ($1) trifecta.
Rio Innoko crossed the wire fourth, 3 1/2 lengths behind Indian Jack, but the gelding was disqualified and placed fifth. Tucker D was placed fourth and was followed officially by Rio Innoko, Big Boom, 7-5 favorite Blazing Navarone, Keep On Zenon On, Orogrande, The Great Dome, Nowiks Dome, and Next Affair.
Jet N G races for Maurcenia Cross of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, who also bred the dark bay or brown son of the Old Trieste stallion Mr. Trieste. The gelding has won one of four outs and has banked $49,694, and he was com- ing off of a victory in a 5 1/2-furlong, $26,500 maiden-special weight dash for New Mexico- breds at Zia Park on October 8.
Hennessy Express is a homebred dark bay or brown filly by Roll Hennessy Roll owned by Dale Taylor.
