Russell & Helen Foutz Distaff Stakes
Making the second start of her 4-year-old campaign, Count Them Again led at every call en route to a one-length victory in the April 24, 6 1/2-furlong Russell & Helen Foutz Distaff Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at SunRay Park.
Count Them Again stopped the timer in 1:19.85 under jockey Aldo Arboleda. Ever Olguin trained the bay Premeditation filly for owners Lola L. Cuellar and Alexandria M. Cuellar.
Count Them Again banked the $32,880 winner’s share of the $52,608 purse.
The filly was bred by Jim Volk. Her sire, Premeditation, is a Kentucky-bred son of the Private Terms stallion Afternoon Deelites. A 1999 foal, Premeditation earned $318,000 from 2001-03, and his seven wins in 18 outs included the 2003 Winsham Lad Handicap at Sunland Park.
Premeditation has sired seven black-type stakes winners and the earners of more than $3.9 million from 75 starters, including multiple stakes winners Mr. Wizard and Beau Wizer. A half-brother to ‘03 West Virginia Derby (G3) winner Real Dandy, the stallion is
owned by Armando Orozco Jr. and stands in Sunland Park, New Mexico.
Count Them Again is also the first starter produced by Count Your Cards, an unraced 9-year-old daughter of Royal Orleans.
Her second dam, the winning Capote mare Bold Feat, ran third in the 1999 Moccasin Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Count Them Again’s third dam, Afleet Francais, was a winning daughter of the Mr. Prospector stallion Afleet and a half- sister to three graded stakes winners, including Changing Ways, the winner
of the ‘94 Schuylerville Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Racecourse.
All told, Count Them Again has won eight of 12 races -- including three of four at the
6 1/2-furlong distance -- and she has earned $303,126. Her five career stakes victories include last year’s Petticoat Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs and New Mexico Cup Oaks (R) at Zia Park.
McWend finished second and was followed by Graceanne, Tutta Terlingua, Datils Native Lady, and Waltzing Attila.
A homebred 5-year-old daughter of the Medaglia D’Oro stallion McKenna’s Justice, McWend races for Tom and Sandy McKenna’s Judge Lanier Racing. The mare has won four of 18 starts and has banked $208,699, and her two stakes wins include the 2019 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R) at Sunland Park.
Graceanne races for Teed Off Stable LLC, which also bred the 4-year-old Quinton’s Gold filly. A $15,000 claimer during the 2019 Zia Park meet, Graceanne has won one of nine outs and has earned $46,270.
