Cypress Handicap
SIGNIFICANT CARTEL
by Tracy Gantz
Always in the hunt, Significant Cartel tries hard every time, but he just hadn’t managed to win a stakes race until the Jan. 15 Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos. He corrected the absence on his resume, however, and now looks poised to add to that in 2012.
Jockey Francisco Rubio broke Significant Cartel out of the gate arrow straight. Favored Touch Of Paso to their immediate outside took the lead, and Significant Cartel battled with the filly through- out most of the 350 yards. In the final strides, Significant Cartel pulled away for a half-length victory in :17.525.
Juan Aleman, who had just been honored for the second consecutive time with the trainer special achievement award by the PCQHRA, conditions Significant Cartel for owner Vinewood Farms. In 18 previous starts, the four-year-old gelding had fin- ished second in the 2011 A Ransom Handicap and third in the 2011 Golden State Derby-G1.
Bred by Scarlett Hill Farm Inc. in Texas, Significant Cartel is out of $249,430-earner Dash Master Miss, whose six stakes wins included the 1992 Kansas Derby-G1. The prolific mare has produced 14 winners from 17 starters, four of them stakes winners and five stakes-placed. Two-time champion Significant Speed was her first stakes winner, garnering victories in such races as the 2000 Rainbow Derby-G1 and Dash For Cash Derby-G1.
Larry Konecne’s homebred Touch Of Paso (Jumpn-Queen Judea) finished second for jockey Cody Jensen and trainer Jim Hanson. The four-year- old filly won the Dec. 3 Corona Kool Handicap.
Jumpn Shake (Jumpn-Jess Shakem) came on at the rail for third under Carlos Huerta. The four-year-old colt, owned by Chad Hart and Bobby Cox, was making his first start for trainer Jaime Gomez.
Completing the field were TR Eddie (TR Dasher-Corona Clique), Toby Fires (Walk Thru Fire-Flare For Toby), and Flare Checking (Check Him Out-Flare For Toby).
Perseverence Stakes
ANN JEMIMA
by John Moorehouse
Ann Jemima served up a stakes victory for owner/breeder Lisa Joneson in the $22,375 Perseverance Stakes for fillies and mares on Jan. 15 at Hialeah Park. The four-year-old filly collected her fourth win in 18 outs, and her second straight.
In the Perseverence, Ann Jemima and Iama PYC drew the two inside starting positions and quickly established themselves as the class of the nine-horse field. Ann Jemima broke from the two gate, with Iama PYC grabbing an early if not small lead. Ann Jemima soon gained the advantage, having just enough in the tank to beat Iama PYC to the wire by a neck.
Trainer Guillermo Valdivia prepped Ann Jemima for the stakes-winning 330-yard run, completed in :16.577 for a career-high 105 speed index. Joneson collected a $13,425 payday, pushing the filly’s lifetime earnings to $55,267. Jockey Alex Baldillez drew the riding assignment, one of five trips to the winner’s circle he made during the Jan. 15 card.
Joneson also bred Mea Brick House, the dam of Ann Jemima. The 1997 mare has five foals, all starters. Ann Jemima is the sole stakes winner, but half-sister Chicksicle also is stakes-placed.
Iama PYC (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Iama Eye Opener) placed a close second for Jose Vasquez. The filly was saddled by Juan Aguirre and ridden by Oscar Hernandez. Eye Opening Favorite was placed third following the disqualification of Mary Corazon, who lugged in and was relegated to eighth. Jorge Mendoza trains Eye Opening Favorite (Mr Eye Opener- Political Favorite) and co-owns the filly with Ramon Escamilla. Jockey Randy Edison did the riding.
Kinky Boots (Agouti-Pure Oklahoma) and Jacis Flashy Girl (SF Royal Quick Flash-TRM Countess Corona) finished in a dead-heat for fourth. Go Mary Be Famous (Shazoom-Streakin O Toole), Aquafina (First Down Dash-Runaway Wave), Marys Corazon (Azoom-Streakin O Toole) and One Famous Cookie (Separatist-One Quick Cookie) completed the field. First Time Favorite was scratched.
Marathon Stakes
EYEONTHELINE
by Tracy Gantz
Eyeontheline gave a textbook example of how
to handle the hook in 870-yard races when he captured the Jan. 21 Marathon Stakes at Louisiana Downs. He took a short lead into the turn, cornered well, and capitalized on that for the victory.
When the gate opened, Zay Zay, Dr Drip, and Dangerous Guns vied for the lead. Jockey Danny Lavergne hustled favored Eyeontheline into the
fray. Dr Drip lugged in, causing Zay Zay to take
up sharply, which left Eyeontheline and Dangerous Guns on the front end. Eyeontheline skimmed the rail on the turn while Dangerous Guns floated out, and Eyeontheline defeated closing Slinkys Fortune by a length in :46.229.
Though Eyeontheline, trained by Kenneth Roberts Sr., broke his maiden at 350 yards, he has shown a penchant for 870-yard races. After finishing fifth in his first attempt around the hook, he won his next two at the distance prior to the Marathon.
Sunset Racing Stable owns Eyeontheline, who was bred by William Reeder. Eyeontheline is out
of the winning Thoroughbred mare Bobbie Lou, who finished third in the 2002 Manor Downs Thoroughbred Futurity. The mare has produced two winners from five Quarter Horse starters
Trevino Clark rode Slinkys Fortune (Dashs Slinky-Chasing A Fortune) for Henry Padgett, who owns and trains the eight-year-old gelding. Slinkys Fortune captured a rare Quarter Horse turf event when he won the Dec. 16 Au Revoir Stakes.
Roberts also trains third-place Dirty Boy Friend (Dirty Coup-Go Girl Friend), another eight-year- old. Raye McMullan and Kenny Roberts Jr. own Dirty Boy Friend, who was ridden by Jeff Jerman.
Completing the field were Zay Zay (Zayzoom- TB-Imjessfirst), Dr Drip (First To Shine-High Seas Operator), who finished fourth and was disqualified to fifth, and Dangerous Guns (The Corona-Garters N Guns). Direct Zach Attack and Lookinbackatdapack were scratched.
