J. Merced Gómez Orozco Classic
CORONA LIPS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
For this classic, eight runners of three years and older born in the United States were registered through the payment of the fees, with which a purse of $336,800 pesos ($16,359 U.S. approx.) was established to dispute at 400 yards.
Three-year-old filly Corona Lips and colt Jess A Reason entered; the others were four years and older, with Lonely In Front BR being the oldest at seven. This is mentioned because it was the first horse Corona Lips who led the arrival at the finish line, and then in the order stated.
Hiclass Patriot (#3) stumbled at the start and then down the lane drifted to the right, forcing The Deadline (#4) to do the same, to the detriment of Victorease (#5), who had to shorten the pace and swerve sharply to the right, missing any opportunity to figure in the race.
Meanwhile, Corona Lips (#1) moved freely near the inside rail with her characteristic power under the assistance of Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez García, maintaining a comfortable advantage over the group to cross the finish line 1 3/4-length over Jess A Reason.
He stopped the clock in :19.18 for a 102 speed index, thus forging his third classic in the current season, after hav-
ing been credited with the
AMCCCCM Classic and the
Félix Bañuelos Jiménez. His
total record is 3-2-1 in six
appearances, with earnings
in excess of $579,000 pesos.
Corona Lips was bred in
the United States by Terry
and Irene Stennett. She is a
daughter of stallion Jess Lips
and out of A Corona Episode
(by Corona Cartel), a mare
who has already produced
One Famous Episode (by
One Famous Eagle), winner of multiple classics at the Hipodromo de las Americas and which earned her the AQHA Mexican Champion, Champion American Three Year Old and Mexico Hi-Point Three-Year–Old Filly from the 2013 racing season.
Corona Lips is owned by Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez where she is trained by Adán López Alejandre, who was present during
the awards. Special guest at this ceremony was Adrián Gutiérrez Gómez to award the winners on behalf of the honoree, José
Merced Gómez Orozco.
Jess A Reason captured sec- ond place under Rogelio Saenz. He is a son of Good Reason SA
and out of the mare Jess Send Me (by Feature Mr Jess) who belongs to the Cuadra Baldeli and was trained by coach Ismael Ayala Salas.
The Deadline was third supported by Aarón Adrián Gómez. He is a son of Favorite Cartel and out of Flying
Regal (by A Regal Choice) and belongs to Cuadra Los Arrallanes. He was
trained by Luis Eduardo Flores Gómez. Royally Significant (Good Reason
SA-Significant Heart), Hiclass Patriot (Jet Black Patriot-Hiclass Quick), SC Mr Sweet Jess (One Sweet Jess-Built For Fun), Lonely in Front BR (Favorite Cartel-Strength In Numbers) and Victorease (One Famous Eagle-All About Ease) completed the order of finish.
With ease, Corona Lips and Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, won the $16,359 J. Merced Gómez Orozco Classic. 202 SPEEDHORSE December 2021
