Dear Members,
As of this writing, we are rapidly closing
in on the holiday season.
This also means that foaling season is
right around the corner. We’re looking forward to a new crop of foals and finalizing our mating plans for our mares. We have some new, exciting stallions for both breeds for you to consider. And, if you’re like me, you can’t wait for it to start, and then soon you can’t wait until it’s over!
Some exciting news to announce; you’re probably aware that the NMHBA worked with The Downs at Albuquerque to develop a million dollar Quarter Horse futurity for 2023. As of this writing, foal nominations from the first payment for the race have exceeded expectations and we’re well on our way to achieving this momentous goal. Thanks to Paul Blanchard, Don Cook, Mary Barber and Mike Logan for setting this important race up for success. And a special thanks to all of the nominators. Remember, if you missed the deadline, you can still get
in. Contact the Downs or the NMHBA if you need details.
On the Thoroughbred front, the purses for NM bred Oaks and Derby at Sunland Park have been raised from $120,000 each to $250,000 each.
It pays to breed and race a New Mexico bred!
I’d like to express my thanks to our staff, Executive Director Mary Barber, registrar Amber Martin, and Paulette Taylor. They work really hard on your behalf.
Also, thanks to our board of trustees who work on a voluntary basis to advance the interests of you, the members. Thanks to you all.
Here’s wishing you a safe and happy holiday season and best of luck to you.
Sincerely,
Tom Goncharoff
