SLM Big Daddy Stakes-G3
MIDDAY NEWS
by John Moorehouse
This just in... Midday News is mighty tough at 550 yards. The five-year-old gelding posted his second straight win at that distance, winning the $50,000 SLM Big Daddy Stakes-G3 on Mar. 9 at Remington Park.
It marked the first victory in stakes company for Midday News, who improved his overall record to 4(1)-3-5(1) in 16 starts. The $29,622 payday from this race pushed the gelding’s total earnings over the quarter-million mark to $251,383.
Linda Joiner, Pat Smith, Izora Southway, Holly King and Kelly Allen own Midday News, who made his debut at 550 last Nov. and won handily. The mar- gin wasn’t as wide this time, as Midday News seized a 1-length lead by the first call and remained ahead, hitting the finish line sporting a 1/2-length margin and finishing in in :28.027 under Raul Ramirez, Jr.
Michael Joiner trains Midday News, who is
no stranger to stakes competition. The gelding placed third in the 2019 running of the West Texas Derby-G3 at Sunland Park.
Jim Streelman and Bill Dale bred Midday News out of Summer Love Song, an unraced 2005 mare.
Why Buy The Cow (Heza Motor Scooter- Southwest Treasure) was second under Jorge Torres for owner Carrol Durbin and trainer Clinton Crawford. Viva Le Don (Rock Solid Jess-Viva Arriba) and Francisco Calderon were third for owner Rockin J Running Horses and trainer Tammy Johnson.

Prepped by Casey Black for owners Darling Farms and Valeriano Racing Stables LLC, Eagles Fly Higher covered 350 yards in :17.582 while racing against a reported 11-mph head wind, and his win- ning margin was a 1/2-length. Mario Delgado rode the 5-year-old sorrel son of 2008 Champion 3-Year- Old Colt One Famous Eagle.
Eagles Fly Higher was making his second start of the season, and he was stretching out in distance off of a third-place finish in the 250-yard Mighty Deck Three Stakes-RG2 for Oklahoma-breds on Mar. 9. The stallion was bred in Oklahoma by V.H. Harman Jr. and Robert Moudy III, and he is out of Lone Bet, a winning daughter of 1987 World Champion First Down Dash.
Eagles Fly Higher’s second dam, the Easy Jet mare RR Le Mistral, won two graded stakes from 1989-91, including the ’90 West Texas Derby-G2 at Sunland Park.

by John Moorehouse
Jimmy Brooks was in the irons for the winner
of the first-ever Oklahoma Juvenile, The Serge Protector, in 2015. In the 2021 version of the event, Brooks and JS Dashin Capi rolled to victory in the $50,000 stakes at Remington Park on March 20.
JS Dashin Capi made a clean break from the No. 3 gate, quickly moving to the front and leading by a 1/2-length at the first call. She held on to win by that same margin, completeing the trip in :15.712.
Brooks and trainer Eddie D. Willis combined
to field the winner in the inaugural running of the Oklahoma Juvenile, which is for horses that came up short qualifying for the Oklahoma Futurity, and pooled their efforts again in this victory. This stakes also broke the maiden for JS Dashin Capi, a two- year-old filly who made her debut in the Oklahoma Futurity trials on March 8.
Owners James Sills and Abelardo Flores Jr. col- lected a $20,000 payday for the stakes victory, which set the filly’s total earnings at $21,070.
Sills and Flores home-bred both the filly and her dam, JS Abel Dasher, a 2013 mare. JS Abel Dasher was stakes-placed herself as a competitor. JS Dashin Capi is her first foal to date.
The Cartels Cadillac (Carters Cartel-Louisiana Cadillac) finished second owner Jose Guzman and trainer Edelmiro Carrizales. Agustin Silva drew the riding assignment. Aint Done Yet (A Revenant-Una Hero) hit the board in third for Dub Seely. The Troy Carter trainee had Josh Romero in the irons.
