National Day of The Charro Championship
ONE HAPPENSTANCE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The race held in honor of the national sport of racing was the second of four stakes on Feb. 28. Seven three-year-old participants, all raised in the United States, were enrolled for the $322,000 pesos (approx. $15,307 U.S.) purse over 350 yards on a fast track.
The bay filly, BP Mariah Cartel, was the favorite after winning the Jesús “Nuchi” Jiménez Sánchez Classic and placing second in the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic, which earned her the Champion 2 Year Old American title for the short 2020 season.
This race had a very different outcome. While BP Mariah Cartel had a very explosive exit, it was insufficient to keep up with the power of her rivals.
In his departure, One Happenstance (#5) contacted BV Myheartwillgoon (#4), while a few yards down the lane Done To Gain (#7) clearly moved out to VGW Daddys Girl (#6). The race followed its fast pace as BP Mariah Cartel was surpassed by BV Myheartwillgoon, and then that one was overtaken by One Happenstance and
Done To Gain, with those two crossing the wire first and second respectively.
Israel Dominguez Morales was the rider responsible for leading the
gelding to his first tri-
umph in four outings. One
Happenstance completed the 350 yards in :17.16 for a 94 speed index.
Raised in the United States
by Thomas Bradbury and
Vaughn Cook, the winner is the
son of stallion One Fabulous
Eagle and is out of Beaus
Wagon by PYC Paint Your
Wagon. He is owned by Cuadra
H – R, where he receives
training from Mr. Herminio
Domínguez Meza, who is offi-
cially represented by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas.
For this win, he added $161,000 pesos (approx. $7,763) to his earnings account, which already had funds resulting from his second
place in the Youth Championship on Dec. 13. As already mentioned, second place went to Done To Gain (Five Bar Cartel-Built For
Fun), with his rider Heriberto Camacho Sotelo, who fin- ished in :17.22. He is owned by Rancho El Surikato and trained by Luis Eduardo Flores Gómez.
BV Myheartwillgoon (BV Travelin Soldier-Azoomin Streak) came in third under José Angel Ambrosio Medina for owner Cuadra Cartas Blanca and trainer José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona.
BP Mariah Cartel (Corona Cartel-BP Mariahs JP), BP Fancy Fling (Im A Fancy
PYC-Southern Fling), Klassy Dixie (Corona Cartel-Klassy Chick) and VGW Daddys Girl (Big Daddy Cartel-Strawberry Style) completed the order of finish.
