Hybrid Vigor is the phenomenon that occurs when two individuals are mated that are genetically different resulting in an improvement in the foal or foals produced.
 FAVORITE CARTEL THE SIRE
We have seen that Favorite Trick serving as
the outcross when mated with Shenoshercorona gives the cross the boost we need for hybrid
vigor to improve our horses. Hybrid vigor is the phenomenon that occurs when two individuals are mated that are genetically different resulting in an improvement in the foal or foals produced. That is how we improve our horses with hybrid vigor.
A great example how hybrid vigor worked
in the Quarter Horse is the Three Bar/Joe Reed P-3 cross. Here are some examples we covered
a while back when we looked at Rocket Bar by Three Bars and his affinity for mares from the Joe Reed P-3 line. Heavenly Flower was the winner of the Rocky Mountain QHA Futurity. Her dam is Sweet Leilani W by Leo. Laurita Bar was the winner of the 330-yard Texas Futurity and Miss Bar Leo was the winner of the Colorado Futurity. The dam of these two runners is Leo’s Midget
by Leo. Joada Bar was the winner of PCQHRA Futurity. Rockarbars won the Lafayette Derby. They were out of Lady Me by Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3 and the sire of Leo.
These examples highlight what geneticists call the F1 cross or the first cross. This is what we have with Favorite Trick and his being crossed on Quarter Horse mares. It produces a higher level of hybrid vigor. So how does this work for Favorite Cartel who is out of a Quarter Horse mare?
When we look at the top twenty runners
sired by Favorite Cartel, we find 10 foals from the First Down Dash line of mares with six through Corona Cartel and five of those out of daughters of Corona Cartel and one out of a daughter of Foose who is by Stel Corona by Corona Cartel; one from a First Down Dash mare; one from a Stoli mare; one from A Regal Choice mare; and one through a daughter of Walk Thru Fire. We see five of these runners come from Chicks Beduino line of mares with two out of daughters of Chicks Beduino and three out of daughters of Separatist by Chicks Beduino. We find three from the Mr Jess Perry line of mares with two out of daughters of Mr Jess Perry and one out of a mare by Feature Mr Jess by Mr Jess Perry. The last two runners show one out of a Strawfly Special mare and the other out of a Check Him Out mare.
The Favorite Cartel/Corona Cartel cross gives us a great example of linebreeding to Corona Cartel and, as we often see, this is also a “return the blood cross” where the common blood from the common ancestor comes to the foal produced through the inbreeding to Corona Cartel, who is the sire of the dam of Favorite Cartel
and the sire of the dam of the foal produced. So, we are linebreeding to Corona Cartel mares with an outcross to Favorite Trick in the foal produced.
Here is a great example of what we are seeing. The five runners out of Corona Cartel mares include the full brothers Powerful Favorite, Runforyourlife and Cyber Monday, who are out of Remember Me Rose. The other two are the full brothers Nomadic and Circle City, and they are out of Moonlight Corona. These five runners have a breeding pattern of 3x2 to Corona Cartel. Then we
see that Corona Cartel is a cross of First Down Dash and Chicks Beduino. So, this is linebreeding to that great cross as well. Then we expand our look at Nomadic and Circle City in that their dam Moonlight Corona is out of Moon Arisen, a daughter of Beduino that is out of Goin For Cash by Dash For Cash. This concentrates the blood of the Dash For Cash/Beduino cross through linebreeding with the outcross to Favorite Trick coming down the sire line to Favorite Cartel.
As Favorite Cartel was starting in the All American Futurity trials, the partnership of Jones and Thompson Racing formed a new partnership with R. D. Hubbard and Jim Helzer for the ownership of the colt. In 2011 when it came time for retirement from the track, a new partnership
bought Favorite Cartel. This is when Steve Burns of Burns Ranch bought the Helzer and Hubbard half of the horse and Favorite Cartel went to Burns Ranch to stand in California. Bobby D. Cox bought the Jones and Thompson half
of Favorite Cartel, giving
Burns and Cox ownership
in 2019. Paul Jones believes
that the original move of Favorite
Cartel to the Burns Ranch was key
to the horse becoming the leading
sire he is today. Paul Jones said it this
way, “I give Steve Burns 100% for proving Favorite Cartel as a sire. We couldn’t have done it without him.”
Oh, by the way, Jones and Thompson have acquired the frozen semen for Favorite Trick, so if you need an outcross you might want to talk to them. You, too, could have an F1 cross to a proven outcross. Just look what Favorite Cartel has done as the 2020 AQHA Leading Sire of Money Earners.
