The photo on page 239 shows Pass Over (Pass ‘Em Up TB-Revision, Pembina) after winning the first ever All American Derby in 1974. Ridden by AQHA Hall of Fame Jockey Jerry Nicodemus, Pass Over won the $438,314 Derby for owner Jack Delmar and AQHA Hall of Fame Trainer Bubba Cascio.
Bred by Nat M. Kieffer, Pass Over raced from two years of age until she was four. During those three years, the mare won 14 races from 39 starts, and set a New Track Record for 350 yards. In addition to the All American Derby, she also won the Kansas Futurity, Sun Country Futurity, Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and Columbus Triple Crown Futurity. She also placed in eight more stakes events. During her freshman year alone, Pass Over made 16 starts with eight wins and six seconds, earning a quarter of a million dollars. Houston Post writer Clark Nealon called her “The Cinderella of the Quarter Horse World.”
After a more than successful career on the track, Pass Over began her career as a broodmare where she produced 13 foals, eight of which went on to win. Her top earner was Special At Midnight, who ran third in the Santa Cruz County Futurity-G2.
Pass Over was honored with an induction to the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2009.
This year’s $808,538 All American Derby-G1 was won by A Pollitical Candy V on Sept. 4. The gelding was ridden by Juan Pulido for owner Valeriano Racing Stables LLC and trainer Santos Carrizales Jr.
