A$10,000 claim in Louisiana turned into stakes gold in Canada when Jessaprimadonna captured the $41,278 Princess Derby at Ajax Downs on July 14.
Cory Spataro rode Jessaprimadonna in both her
trial and the final. The filly won her trial by 1 1/4-lengths for the fourth qualifying spot. She broke second in the final and moved up to score by a neck in :17.683 for 350 yards. The back-to-back wins were the first for Jessaprimadonna since she broke her maiden in her racing debut.
Last December at Evangeline Downs, trainer Fernando Lopez
claimed Jessaprimadonna for owner Erin Chrisman for $10,000. The filly began racing at Ajax Downs in June, now owned by Craig Spada and Isaak Fehr and trained by Spada.
Leroy Janacek Jr. bred Jessarprimadonna in Louisiana from Favorite Primadonna, who has produced one other starter and winner. The second dam, Grade 1 winner Miss Racy Vike, also pro- duced Champions Miss Racy Jess and One Sweet Racy.
GFR Equine Services’s home- bred Streakinlilwagon (Fast Prize Jordan-La Jollas Fortune) ran second. Helen Vanek rode the filly for trainer Jason Pascoe.
Ramiro Castillo piloted Jessies Good Candy (Jess Good Candy- Effortless Jessie) to third for owner Rick Crispi and trainer Bryn Robertson.
Rosie Perry (Mr Jess Perry-Black Rosalita) finished fourth. Goodness Graceious (Louisiana Senator-Dr Steppin Out) finished fifth, but
was disqualified to seventh, moving Corrina Corrine (Corona Cartel-Illegal Feature) into fifth and Checkered Flagg (Freighttrain B-Lett Her Zoom) into sixth. Ice Cream Cartel (Five Bar Cartel-McM On Thin Ice) and JLs Deans Dynasty (Tee Cos-Fredavilles Dynasty) ran eighth and ninth. Ah Candyland was scratched.
