SPY FOR THE SENATE
by Tracy Gantz
Spy For The Senate usually spends the winters in his
native Oklahoma, competing at Remington Park, but he has done much of his racing at Ajax Downs in Canada. There he captured the $16,312 QROOI Distance Series #1 Stakes as the 3-10 favorite on July 7.
Ridden by Ismael Mosqueira, Spy For The Senate came away from the gate in fourth. He moved up to take the lead in the 350-yard race, scoring 3/4-length in :17.622.
Jason Pascoe trains Spy For The Senate for owner Milena Kwiecien. A 5-year-old horse, Spy For The Senate won the 2018 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity and two of the
QROOI Distance Series last year. Mary Hainline bred Spy For
The Senate from Corona Spy, offered the colt for sale at the 2017 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale, and repurchased him for $6,000. Corona Spy has produced three starters, all winners, including MH Apollitical Spy, who ran third in the 2020 Speedhorse Futurity-G3. The second dam is I Spy A Fly, third in the 2002 Refrigerator Handicap at Los Alamitos and third in the 2003 Turf Paradise Open Quarter Horse Derby-G3.
Erik Lehtinen trains second- place Perrier Special (Dominyun- Shenandoah Special), a 3-year-old
gelding he bred and owns with his wife, Joyce. Perrier Special won one of three previous races, and Rachael Isaacs rode him in the Distance Series.
Ruth Barbour owns and trains third-place Chicksdigmymoneybags (Chicks Regard-Aaneta). Tony Phillips rode the 5-year-old gelding, who placed in two earlier stakes.
Completing the field were Eye Am The Eagle (One Dashing Eagle-Imagine If), Tempting
First Dash (Shining First Dash-A Tempting Chick), Jess A Deal (Dealagame-Jess Marcy) and Five Bar Fandango (Five Bar Cartel-Had To Be Fandango).
