Since jockey Ricardo Moreno has taken over the riding assignment, Hortons Real Deal has won his last four races in a row. His latest was in the $31,789 Alberta Bred Derby held at Century Mile on Sept. 18.
The colt came into the finals with the fastest qualifying time from the Sept. 3 trials. In the finals, he broke from the 4-post, was squeezed from the outside and he was fighting for
a place to run. Ricardo had to wait until the colt was in the clear, then they went to work. They were a head in front at the halfway point and crossed the line the same way.
Hortons Read Deal earned an 86 speed index and a first
place check worth $14,304, boosting his total earnings
to $28,711 for owner/breeder Charles G. Stojan. His race record stands at four wins from eight starts.
Stojan bred Hortons Real Deal out of winner Winkin Dynasty. She has produced one winner from three starters.
Eyesa Timber (First Timber- Eyesa Perry) won his trial heat for the second fastest qualifying time. In the finals, he ran true to form with a second place finish, also running in tight quarters under J. Botello for owner/trainer Wesley T. Oulton.
