First Cold Wave, fourth-fastest qualifier, got up at the wire to win Canada’s richest Quarter Horse race,
the $93,047 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity at Ajax Downs on Oct 27.
Prepped by Jason Pascoe for owner Robert Bailey, First Cold Wave covered 400 yards in :20.121 under Brian Bell and their margin of victory was a short nose from Eye Live For Candy.
“He’s just an awesome horse,” said Bell. “I saw (Eye Live For Candy) coming at me, but this guy just jumped out a few more strides and got it done.”
First Cold Wave was coming off of a third-place finish in the second
of two Alex Picov Memorial Futurity trials on Oct. 6.
The gelding is out of winner Cassies Carver, who ran third in the 2012 Fort Erie Derby.
First Cold Wave made his career debut with a 10th-place finish in a 300-yard maiden-special-weight dash at Remington Park. The gelding
has won four of seven races, and the $37,220 winner’s share of this purse from his second career stakes victory boosted his earnings to $79,370. His resume includes a wire-to-wire win as the fastest qualifier in the Sept. 15, $51,622 Ontario Sires Futurity trials.
Eye Live For Candy (A Revenant- Eyesa Candy Maker) finished
second under Ismael Mosqueira for owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe. Fastest qualifier SW The Redeemer (Hes Relentless- Rockin Miss Kitty) finished third under Josh Scott for owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe.
Lethal Tres Seis (Tres Seis-Lethal Cartel), Blazin Magician (Maryland Magic-Gotta Blazin Body), Keepr Of The Stars (Star Fire Dash-Dazzlin Lady), SW Snowmagicallykool (Maryland Magic-Barbie Kool), Rapter (Bodacious Jess-Make Us A Miracle), and Magic Flare (Maryland Magic-Fire Within) completed the order of finish. Night Leader was scratched.
