                FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
   Dear Members,
By the time you get this magazine in
the mail, the 2023 Zia Festival at Ruidoso Downs will be in the books. I would like to congratulate all the connections of our 2022 champions. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our party and awards ceremony. Thank you to Ruidoso Downs for providing the food and the use of the Turf Club, Crystal Sifuentes and her staff, Andy Golden who produced our trophies,
Speedhorse Magazine who takes all the trophy presentation photos, and the Trustees who worked to make it a success. I would also like to thank Walt Wiggins for all his help with our Town Hall Discussion that was held in the Sales Pavilion.
We are gearing up for the New Mexico Bred Sale that will be held on August 11th and 12th and the Select Sale that will be held on September 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. We plan to have our cookout again this year and it will be held out in the big sale barn on August 10th, the Thursday night before the New Mexico Bred Sale and we hope you can join us. Good luck to all the consignors and buyers.
The first million-dollar New Mexico Bred race is coming up on October 15th at the Downs At Albuquerque. The nominations for this race were outstanding and I hear
that there are a record number of horses that will compete in the trials. A lot of the NM Bred Quarter Horses at this year’s sales will be paid into the 2024 New Mexico State Fair QH Futurity so be sure to look for the stickers on the stall doors for those horses that are nominated.
We had to look far and wide to fill our open part-time position here at the NMHBA offices, but we finally were able to hire a young lady named Erica Johnson. She is a very quick learner and seems to be enjoying her work. She speaks Spanish so that is a big plus as well! I hope you all get a chance to meet her either here at the office or at the New Mexico Bred sale.
I would like to welcome our newly elected Trustees Denise Chambliss and Patrick Sanders and to welcome back Debra Laney to our Board. I would also like to thank Annette McCloy, Verner Query, and Mac Murray for all their years of service to this association. There has been a lot of controversy that our Trustees have had to deal with over the last few years and a
lot of meetings to attend. Thank you for all the time you have donated to this association.
Sincerely,
Mary M. Barber
NMHBA Executive Director
