Jetting Thru Clouds, a homebred daughter of Jet Black Patriot owned and trained by Joel Gutierrez, scored an upset victory in the May 20, 350-yard New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses at SunRay Park.
Sent to post at odds of 20- 1 in a full field of 10 juveniles, Jetting Thru Clouds defeated fastest qualifier and 2-1 favorite Eye Am On It by a half of a length in :17.630. Edgar Martinez rode the black filly, who earned a 93 speed index and the $119,234 winner’s share of a $253,689 purse, the largest purse in the stakes’ 38-year history.
Jetting Thru Clouds set the eighth-fastest qualifying time with her head win in one of
five New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity trials on May 5. The filly’s sire, the late Jet Black Patriot, was a multiple graded stakes winning son of
the Chicks Beduino stallion Game Patriot. Racing in Louisiana and New Mexico in 2008, Jet Black Patriot earned $876,921 from nine starts, and his seven wins included the Louisiana QHBA (RG1), Lee Berwick (RG1) and Mardi Gras (RG2) futurities. He also ran second in world Champion Stolis Winner’s All American Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.
From a dozen crops to date, Jet Black Patriot has sired the earners of more than $18.5 million, including multiple graded stakes winners San Lorenzo Jet, Jet Black Grace, and Jetblack Gold
Moment, and graded stakes winners You Drive I
Fly and Louisiana Jambalaya. A 2006 foal and half- brother to Grade 3 winner Wild Tycoon, the stallion died last year from complications from colic.
Jetting Thru Clouds is out of Clouds N Rainbows, a winning daughter of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Feature Mr Jess and a finalist in
the 2005 Texas QHA Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds
at Fredericksburg, Texas. The filly’s second dam, Hadif’s Ballerina (TB), was a winning daughter of the Clever Trick stallion Hadif who produced six winners from six Thoroughbred starters, including Favorite Dancer, a stakes-placed Favorite Trick filly.
Jetting Thru Clouds’ third dam, the winning Hempen mare Hempen’s Ballerina, foaled one winner from two starters. The filly traces back to her fourth dam, Cape Fear, a winning daughter of the Alibhai stallion Traffic Judge whose seven starters included Thats Gone, a stakes-winning half-sister to Hempen’s Ballerina.
Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Jetting Thru Clouds has won two of four outs and has banked $123,274.
Jess Have One More finished third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Jetting Thru Clouds. Jumpn Runn, Valentino Four King, EB Little O, Apolitical Magic, JM Special Ryon, Play Again and Chicka Boom Babe completed the order of finish.
