Mexican Breeders Derby Challenge
REY ALFREDO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The finalists for this derby were decided in only two trial races held on Feb. 20, with the participation of 18 Mexican-bred horses, over a distance of 350 yards. This small number is striking, compared to the 55 who ran the “trials” in 2021.
It was Rey Alfredo who set the best
time in :17.167 and, with that, he was the favorite to win the final, also considering the consistency in his performance shown in his five previous outings.
The final was run on Mar. 6 and there was no surprise in the result. Rey Alfredo had an excellent start from the 3-post
and remained in front under José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. They crossed the finish line 3/4-lengths ahead of the amazing Joey
Garoo AT, who was the least favored in the wagering by closing with odds of 22.40.
Rey Alfredo and Ambrosio needed only 17 seconds to cover the 350 yards, achieving a personal best speed index of 97. With this, they captured 42% of the purse assigned to the race, which was $768,220 pesos ($36,479 U.S. approx.).
As a two year old, he was Champion of the Mexican Breeders Futurity Challenge, and now of the Derby, and also won the consolation of the Subasta Selecta Futurity. His earnings are already approaching 2.5
million pesos and in his nine outings he has obtained eight first places.
Bred by Rachuán Suárez Kuri, the gelding is the son of the stallion Fearless Fritz and out of Proud Corrina (by Corona Cartel). He
is owned by The Cuadra Baldeli and trained by José Guadalupe García “Lupillo”,
but Nahum de Jesús Lagunes Montero saddled him.
The award ceremony was led by Javier Rosique León, Adriana Gómez Barnola
and Manuel Queijeiro, directors of the AMCCCCM, accompanied by José Mauricio
