Inaugural Classic
JRS CORONAS SHADOW
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The 2022 racing season at the Hipodromo de las Americas began on Feb. 11, the date on which the opening ceremony was held, presided over by the General Director of the Hipodromo de las Americas, Carlos Alamán González, accompanied by special guests, Felicia Mercado, Tony Balardi and Carlos Bonavides, with his son Tadeo, who in unison cut the ribbon to symbolize the start of the racing season. That Friday and Saturday featured Thoroughbred horses, who were responsible for thrilling the public that gathered in the stands.
It was on Sunday, Feb. 13, that the fast Quarter Horses burst onto the track, opening the race card with the Inaugural Classic, a race reserved for runners four years and older, at
the distance of 350 yards, to which only four horses were registered, which paid a $40,000 pesos entry fee, the substantial part of the purse of $244,000 pesos ($11,806 U.S. approx.).
Accustomed to this classic having more participants, it was strange that this time it was just a quartet, formed by runners of proven
experience and genetic quality. Due to his past performance, JRS Coronas Shadow was the favorite, who in his previous outing won the Champion of Champions Classic (for the second time), where he dominated the two main contenders he had in this race: Jay Number 7 and Corona Squared.
From the beginning, JRS Coronas Shadow was at the front of the group in the center of the track, and as he advanced towards the finish, he strengthened his lead until reaching the wire by 2 3/4-length advantage over Corona Squared, who made a good run very close to the inside.
It was Yair Daniel Báez who was responsible for directing the winner who, with ease, stopped the timer in :16.87, enough for a 101 speed index, successfully began his third season of racing at the Hipodromo de las Americas, where JRS Coronas Shadow made his debut
in 2019 with previous experience in racetracks in the United States.
He now has a race record of 30-11-6-2 with earnings of over 5.5 million pesos.
JRS Coronas Shadow is the son of the stallion Coronas Leaving You out of the
mare Shadow Of Colors (by Dashing Val) and was bred in
the United States by Julien R. Stevens III. He is owned by Cuadra Los Gavilanes and is trained by Rubén Romo García.
As already mentioned, Corona Squared finished in second place, well led by José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. The 6 year old is the son
of Corona Cartel out of Louisiana Corona (by Jess Louisiana Blue), who runs for Rancho
Las Gaviotas and was saddled by Victor Hugo Arias Oropeza.
The third place went to Jay Number 7
(Im Fancy PYC – First Ginlark, My First Moon), under the encouragement of Rogelio Sáenz Ortiz. He belongs to the Cuadra Cartas Blancas, where he is trained by José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona.
The quartet was completed with the burly sorrel Tenayas Kid, a son of First Down
Dash out of Lady Tenaya (by Sixarun), with Alejandro Górmez Díaz at the helm. He is owned by the Cuadra Santa Elena and trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
