Velocidad Classic
JAY NUMBER 7
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The Velocidad Classic was held among six participants of four years and older, in the short distance of 250 yards, to dispute a purse of $278,200 pesos ($13,210 U.S. approx.).
The spotlight focused on JRS Coronas Shadow and Jay Number 7, due to the performance they have shown in races of this level, having completed against one another
in some of them, such as the 2020 & 2021 Champion of Champions Classic and, recently, in the 2022 Inaugural Classic.
Now they found themselves in the Velocidad Classic with the expectation that they would give a great show. The race began with a slightly favorable start for JRS Coronas Shadow, an advantage that in each stride was discounted by its rival in a vertiginous duel in the center of the track.
They soon made it past the finish line, and, at first glance, it was not possible to distinguish the winner. It was necessary to wait for the photo to give the verdict
in favor of Jay Number 7 and jockey José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. They completed the 250 yards in :12.69 seconds (SI 106),
approaching the Track and World Record set by Allens Cash 10 years ago, with :12.58 seconds.
The winner and his rider
were received affectionately
by their trainer José Eduardo
Baltazar Carmona, who led
them to the winner’s circle
to be awarded along with
members and followers of the
Cuadra Cartas Blancas, that owns him.
Jay Number 7 was bred in the United States by Dustin Cox. He is the son of stallion Im A Fancy PYC and out of First Ginlark by My First Moon. His sporting career began in the United States, where
his triumphs in the Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge Stakes, AQHA John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship, as well as third place in the Remington Park Juvenile Stakes stand out.
After placing third in the (unofficial) El Mejor del Norte Derby, he successfully debuted at the Hipodromo de las Americas
on Dec. 13, 2020,
winning the Champion of Champions Classic, this being his first match against JRS Coronas Shadow. At the beginning of the 2021 season, the Inaugural Classic was scored, followed by a fourth place finish
in the Champion of Champions Classic, while
JRS Coronas Shadow scored the same for the second time; history repeated itself at the Inaugural Classic on
Feb. 13, 2022.
His current record is 9-0-3 in 16 starts, with earnings exceeding 4.2 million pesos.
Yair Daniel Baez made an excellent ride to take second place under JRS Coronas Shadow (Coronas Leaving You-Shadow Of Colors)
for owner Cuadra Los Gavilanes and trainer Rubén Romo Hernández.
Makit Snappi (One Dashing Eagle-Duck Mea Running), finished in third place, well driven by Gabriel Arturo Vega, for owner Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez and trainer Adán López Alejandre.
BP Mariah Cartel (Corona Cartel – BP Mariahs JP), Bayou A Cartel (Corona Cartel- Louisiana Corona) and Tenayas Kid (First Down Dash – Lady Tenaya) completed the order of finish.
