The photo on page 228 shows AQHA Hall of Fame inductee Moon Deck (Top Deck TB-Moonlight Night, Peace Pipe TB). Foaled in 1950 at J.B. Ferguson’s ranch, Moon Deck is by fellow AQHA Hall of Famer Top Deck and out of unraced Moonlight Night.
At two years of age, Ferguson sent Moon Deck to trainer Paul Simar in Texas, where he began his racing career under rider Pat Castille. The stallion hit the track at three years of age and raced until he was eight. During that time, he won 11 races from 62 starts and earned $22,086. He won the 1955 Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and 1953 New Mexico State Fair Derby, among others. Moon Deck was also third in the 1953 State Fair Stallion Stakes and 1955 Champion Stakes.
After his career on the track, he went to the breeding shed where he sired 343 foals with 261 starters. Of those, 181 went on to become winners and 20 became stakes winners. His foals earned over $1.2 million, making him part of an elite list of sires. Moon Deck is the sire of two Champions, with 3-time World Champion Jet Deck as his top earner with 13 stakes wins. Jet Deck was also a 3-Time Champion and joined his sire in the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1991.
Moon Deck passed away in 1974 at the Keith-Bell Quarter Horse Ranch and was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1996.
