Americus Girl was the dam of Lady Josephine. She was a race mare that won such stakes as the Phoenix Stakes, Royal Stakes, Fern Hill Stakes and Portland Stakes. She reportedly ran five furlongs at Epsom in a time of 56 4/5.
Americus, the sire of Americus Girl, was bred by “Lucky” Baldwin’s Santa Anita Stud in California. He was the winner of the Brookwood Handicap, Culver Handicap and Flying Stakes. He was exported to England and then Ireland where he stood at stud.
The pedigree of Americus has an interesting tie to the legendary source
of speed Domino. When you look at Domino’s pedigree you see that he carries multiple crosses to Lexington, Boston, Reel and Reel’s sire Glencoe. The breeding

patterns are: 3x4x4 to Lexington; 4x5x5x5 to Boston, the sire of Lexington; 4x5 to Reel; and 6x5x6x6 to Glencoe, the sire
of Reel. Lizzie G, the second dam of Domino, has a breeding pattern of 2x3
to Reel with a 3x4x4 breeding pattern
to her sire Glencoe and a 3x3 breeding pattern to Boston. Then we look at the pedigree of Americus and see that he has a breeding pattern of 3x3 to Lexington by Boston, and a breeding pattern 3x3 to Novice by Glencoe. The sire of Americus is Emperor of Norfolk by Norfolk by Lexington by Boston, and Norfolk is
out of Novice by Glencoe. The dam of Americus was Clara D, and her dam was The Nun by Lexington and out of Novice by Glencoe. This makes Norfolk and The Nun full brother and sister. The dam of
Americus Girl was Palotta by Gallinule by Isonomy and Gallinule is out of Moorhen by Hermit. The dam of Palotta is Maid of Kilcreene by Arbitrator and she was out of Querdida by King John.
When the Aga Khan bred Mumtaz Mahal to his Derby winner Blenheim, he got Mumtaz Begum, the dam of Nasrullah. She went to the track to win two starts from eight races. Mumtaz Begum was the dam of several important foals including Sun Princess, the dam of Royal Charger. This makes Nasrullah and Royal Charger 3/4 brothers. Mumtaz Begum was the dam of Nizami, and he was her second stakes winner in the Coombe Stakes. Blenheim, the sire of Mumtaz Begum, was sired by Blandford and was out of Malva Girl by Charles O’Malley.
“Although he sired the 1890 Derby Stakes winner Sainfoin, he was best known as a reliable source of speed.”- Avalyn Hunter said of Springfield
