 THE PEDIGREE
We will begin our look at the pedigree of Valiant Hero with his breeder Julianna Hawn Holt and her famous Cross Triangle Ranch. The Cross Triangle Ranch doesn’t use embryo transfer and so each mare raises her baby. The Holt breeding program has a stellar broodmare band and Corona Chick was one of the mares that highlighted the program.
Corona Chick was bred and raced by Robert Etchandy and trained by Frank Monteleone for her racing career. She was later transferred to Sharon Etchandy in 2000 and then a short time later she was listed as owned by the Etchandy Breeding Stables LLC. During her life, she was leased by the partnership of Robert Etchandy/ Blane Schvaneveldt from 1994 to 1996, and the partnership of Robert Etchandy/Vessels Stallion Farm from 1996 to 2000. In 2001, she made her final move to Julianna Hawn Holt’s Cross Triangle Ranch where she lived out her life.
The race record of Corona Chick
shows that she had 18 starts with 15 wins including a 13-race win streak. She set a New Track Record at Los Alamitos going :17.22 for 350 yards and at Hollywood Park going 400 yards in :19.63. She was
a four-time Grade one winner in the
Ed Burke Memorial Futurity-G1, Dash For Cash Futurity-G1, Kindergarten Futurity-G1 and Governor’s Cup Derby-G1. She also won the Governor’s Cup Futurity-G2, which gives her five stakes wins. Her last race was a second in the Southern California Derby-G2. She was fifth in the Bay Meadows Futurity-G1, the only time she didn’t finish first or second in a race. She was the 1991 Champion Two Year Old, Champion Two- Year-Old Filly and the 1992 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, as well as the 1997 AQHA Broodmare of the Year.
Corona Chick produced 16 foals
with 14 starters that earned 13 ROM
and four stakes winners with earnings
of $3,625,158. Corona Cartel was her
first foal and first stakes winner. He was sired by Holland Ease, and this gives us
an interesting side note. Holland Ease
was a racing competitor of Corona Chick that faced her in the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity finishing third, Dash For Cash Futurity finishing third, Kindergarten Futurity finishing second, and Governor’s Cup Derby finishing second. Holland Ease was sired by First Down Dash and out of Easy Henryetta by Easy Jet.
Valiant Hero winning the Grade 1 2006 Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park.
Ruidoso Yearling Sale for $500,000 by the partnership of Henry and Melinda Brown, Homer Hill and Terry Bell. He went to
the track for them, starting his race career in the barn of Jack Brooks as a two year old and finishing his race career with Michael Joiner as a three year old. At two, he put together a race record of eight start with four wins, two seconds and one third winning the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 and
the Dash For Cash Juvenile Invitational earning $489,438. He made six starts at three with a win in the Heritage Place Derby-G2 and a second in the Rainbow Derby-G1. He earned $179,195 from three wins, one second and one third and was fifth in the All American Derby-G1. He went across the finish line first, second or third in 12 of his 14 starts earning a total of $668,633.
