“This is probably a step up in company,” said trainer Christopher O’Dell in an interview with StallioneSearch. “There were some very good horses in there, like A Pollitical Candy V.”
“It takes so much luck,” the trainer said. “We got lucky when we drew good because he likes the one hole. He seems to run good down there and I don’t know why. Some horses seem to like the outside—he likes the inside. He hits his stride and just keeps on going.”
The win was especially satisfying because Bomb Cyclone had finished fourth behind A Pollitical Candy V in the All American Derby.
“Not to make excuses, but we had a little trouble before the All American Derby, two
or three days before,” O’Dell stated. “He’s so big, he got cast in his stall and got a little sore behind. We massaged him and worked on him and got him to where he was good to run.”
O’Dell gave Bomb Cyclone some time off after the $2 Million Futurity.
“He came with me to my ranch in Ruidoso,” the trainer said. “I gave him a controlled turnout. I never even gallop him at all until the schooling races were over at Ruidoso around May 1. He needed the time off.”
After breaking his maiden at Ruidoso Downs and competing in a couple of trials for the big futurities there, Bomb Cyclone returned to his native state of California.
He finished the year with an impressive win in the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1.
The Los Alamitos Super Derby field was formidable and included A Pollitical Candy V, winner of this year’s All American Derby-G1. However, Bomb Cyclone, owned by Connie Rosenthal’s Rosenthal Ranch, still went off as the odds-on favorite.
Dr. Steve Burns bred Bomb Cyclone, out of the graded stakes winning mare Remember Me Rose. She has produced 21 winners from 29 starters. Of those, eight are stakes winners, including 2020 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 winner Cyber Monday (full brother), and five are stakes-placed.
Bomb Cyclone isn’t the first Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose offspring to do well for Rosenthal Ranch. Powerful Favorite, a six-year-old full brother, is a multiple Grade 1 winner at Los Alamitos for Rosenthal and has earned in excess of $1 million.
Because of Powerful Favorite’s success, Rosenthal bought Bomb Cyclone and others
in the family. She also owns a two-year-old full brother named Cyber Attack, who ran second in this year’s Rainbow Futurity-G1 and Golden State Million Futurity-G1.
Edward and Von Zae McNelis’ homebred Scoops Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Bye Sweet Girl) finished second under jockey Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa. The multiple graded stakes winner was coming off a victory in the Golden State Derby-G2.
M & G Farms Inc.’s homebred Golden Boi (Favorite Cartel-Logans Dash) ran third under jockey Ruben Lozano for trainer Valentin Zamudio. Golden Boi’s three stakes wins include the 2021 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
Completing the field were A Pollitical Candy V (Apollitical Jess-Rock Candy SA), Dasha Good Reason (Good Reason SA-Dasha Freda), Jess Fire Me (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Sass Me), Inspyre (Corona Cartel-Sinuous), In Hott Pursuit (One Famous Eagle-Pandorum), Corona Yo (Corona Cartel-Harem Carver), and Jess Hez On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Send Me).
Trainer Christopher O’Dell congratulates Bomb Cyclone for his Super Derby win.
Jockey Eduardo Nicasio has been aboard Bomb Cyclone for every one of his career starts.
