Arizona RTIP Offers 4-Year Scholarship
The University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP) is offering the Odds On Racing Scholarship, a 4-year full-tuition scholarship award for new and transfer students entering this coming fall, thanks to a donation by racing enthusiast and horse owner Dana Parham and his standardbred racing operation Odds On Racing Stable. “This award allows the best and brightest students, from any financial background, who are interested in racing to attend the University of Arizona and join the list of distinguished RTIP alumni,” said Robert Hartman, chair of the Race Track Industry Program. Additional 20,000 H-2B Visas Offered
According to a press release by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) will offer an additional 20,000 H-2B visas
to employers for positions starting on or
before March 31, 2022. The visas are used by employers for seasonal guest workers, with 6,500 reserved for nationals of Honduras,
El Salvador and Guatemala, and 13,500 for returning workers. The H-2B visa guest worker
program is a nonimmigrant visa program used by industries that need temporary non- agricultural help when domestic workers are unavailable. Horse trainers rely on the H-2B program to fill various backside positions. For more information, visit federalregister.gov.
Leon Bard Passes Away
Trainer Leon Bard, 75, passed away on Jan.
5 in Wheelock, Texas, following a battle with cancer. Bard rode horses in his youth, competed in rodeo, and worked for Keith Barnett Sr. Cutting Horses before becoming an exercise rider and jockey. He then began a training career in which he conditioned the earners of over
$6 million. His top earners include Ruidoso Futurity-G1 winner Zip First and Sam Houston Futurity-G2 winner This Is An Eagle, among many others. His favorite horse, however,
was Cash From Texas, winner of the 1994 Speedhorse Sprint Derby-G3. He is survived by three children, life partner Jackie Riddle, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, as well as many other family members and friends.
Larry J. Comeaux Passes Away
Larry J. Comeaux, 72, passed away Jan. 7
at his home in Carencro, Louisiana. Comeaux was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked
for 15 years as a truck driver. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing and working the horse sales. He is survived by a daughter and granddaughter, and many other family members and friends.
John G. Johnson Passes Away
Longtime horseman John G. Johnson of Shadehill, South Dakota, passed away at the age of 90. Johnson has been involved in Quarter Horse racing since the 1980’s. He is the owner
of over 1/2-million in earners. He is the owner
of multiple stakes winners, but perhaps his best horse was Faster Than Hasta ($245,742), winner of the 2020 Covered Bridges Stakes-G3 and 2021 Energy Downs Distance Challenge - trained by his son, longtime trainer Bob Johnson with over $6 million in earners. John is survived by his
wife Shirley, three sons, eight grandchildren and
