Donny Sandoval Passes Away
Former jockey Donald “Donnie” Michael Sandoval of New Mexico passed away from COVID complications at the age of 64 on Jan. 19. Donnie was born in Colorado in 1958.
He won multiple championships as a boxer
for Aztec Boxing Club, including the Golden Gloves and a third in the National Junior Olympics. He later became a jockey, riding the earners of more than $1.5 million with 8-time stakes winner Flight Nine as his top money earner. Sandoval was known as a caring and kind individual who would help anyone in need. He
is survived by his wife Christina, son Christian, and many other family members and friends.
Blood Money Dies
2019 colt Blood Money (Apollitical Blood- Zoom To The Money, Shazoom), the #1 leading money earning colt of 2021 with $1,123,142 earned, died Jan. 17 while undergoing colic surgery. Bred by Spring Hill Farms LLC and owned by Rojas Racing Stables LLC, Blood Money won seven of eight starts including the LQHBA Louisiana Million Futurity-G1, Lee Berwick Futurity-G1 and Laddie Futurity with a second in the LQBHA Sale Futurity-G2.
Dale Youree Passes Away
Barrel racing legend Dale Youree passed away
at the age of 93 on Jan. 27. Dale met his wife Florence, a barrel racer, at a rodeo where he was calf-roping when she asked him if she could borrow his horse to ride in the grand entry. They married in 1950, and after he graduated from Oklahoma
A & M (now Oklahoma State University) they worked on Florence’s parent’s ranch and continued to rodeo. They soon welcomed son John and daughter Renee. While Florence was pregnant, Dale began helping out with the barrel horses and this soon became their livelihood. They began producing rodeos in Oklahoma and Texas and launched Youree Horsemanship Camps as well as the Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association. They
also helped found the Barrel Futurities of America (BFA). As a family, they have earned many titles
in the rodeo arena, including the WPRA World Championship and the NFR Championship. Florence and Dale were three weeks shy of their 72nd wedding anniversary. Dale is survived by many loving family members and friends.

 The photo on page 230 shows Super Sound Charge (Roma Charge-Special Sound TB, Bold Commander) winning the 1979 Josies Bar Handicap at Los Alamitos. The stallion was ridden by Kenneth Hart for owner Floyd M. Terrell and 12-time Champion Trainer Blane Schvaneveldt.
Bred by Duncan Farms & Joe Duncan, Super Sound Charge is by stakes winner Roma Charge and is out of the unraced Thoroughbred Special Sound. Super Sound Charge is a half-brother to multiple stakes winners Specially Fast, Special Sound and Ronas Sound.
Super Sound Charge began his career on the track as a two year old in 1978 and raced until he was four. During his career on the track, he made 29 starts with 14 wins and $295,052 in total earnings. In addition to the Josie’s Bar Handicap, Super Sound Charge also won the Vessels Maturity, Los Alamitos Invitational Championship, Go Man Go Handicap, Chicado V Handicap, and Bay Meadows Inaugural Handicap. In 1980, he was named AQHA World Champion, Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Stallion.
After a stellar career on the track, Super Sound Charge made his way to the stallion barn where he sired 481 foals with 188 starters and earnings of $1,964,382. He sired 11 stakes win- ners with West Texas Futurity-G1 winner Life Styles being his top earner.
In 1987, Super Sound Charge was sold to Wellington Queiroz in Brazil, and very little was heard about him in the U.S. after that. He died in January of 1992 at the age of 16.
The 2021 AQHA World Champion is Danjer, who was also named the 2021 and 2020 Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding.
