Smithworks and Southern Electric named APHA’s 2021 World Champion Running Horses
World Champion Running Horse: Smithworks
Smithworks, a two-year-old sorrel tobiano
colt by Painted Turnpike and out of the Mighty Invictus (QH) mare Shesa Mighty Chick, won his first World Championship Running Horse title along with a pair of championships in the two-year-old division. Smithworks won two
stake races in 2021—the Grade 1, $198,100 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity as well as the $230,475 Speedhorse Graham Futurity-G1— pushing his race career total to $215,689.
All of this came after Smithworks nearly died with his dam at birth. On track to disprove the axiom that orphans never run well, Smithworks is certainly on fire and shows the same kind of talent that may put him in the same category as his sire Painted Turnpike, who won 26 of 31 of his lifetime starts, the all-time winningest Paint by money earned with $465,442.
Smithworks is owned by Bryan Hawk of Purcell, Okla., and bred by Matt Whitekiller out of Sallisaw, Okla., who also claimed the 2021 Leading Breeder title.
World Champion Solid Paint-Bred Running
Horse: Southern Electric
In his third year running, Southern Electric ramped up the wattage and won three stake races—the Paul Harber Stakes, the Colors of Texas Maturity, and the first annual Karen Utecht Memorial Stakes—contributing to his impressive $291,278 in lifetime earnings. That trio of wins produced a trio of titles. Southern Electric was named 2021’s Solid Paint-Bred Aged Champion, Solid Paint-Bred Gelding
Champion, and the World Champion Solid Paint-Bred Running Horse.
The 2017 sorrel solid gelding by CRM Livewire and out of Ze Southern Girl (QH) was bred by owners Dan and Kaye Jones of Kemp, Texas. This adds to his already impressive record which includes 2019’s Champion Solid Paint- Bred Two-Year-Old and 2020’s Champion Solid Paint-Bred Three-Year-Old.

It was cold in Oklahoma City but hot at the Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in January with across-the-board increases for all breeds, especially Paints. Race-bred Paints and double-registered horses grossed over more than $166,000 with an average price for early yearlings of $7,200.
BP Political Policy was the highest-selling Paint
at $30,000. Purchased by Neal Cormier of Lake Charles, Louisana, the 2017 sorrel overo mare
by Apollitical Jess (QH) and out of CC Policy (QH) was APHA’s 2021 Champion Aged Mare. Following close behind were Tales U Lose (Wagon Tales (QH) x Elaina Go Go) and JS Prairie Chicken (Royal Quick Flash x Imachickenkicker) who both sold for $17,000. JS Prairie Chicken was a double win as she is bred to the champion sire Tempting Dash (QH) and due to foal on Feb. 13.
This year’s extra sale day boosted the gross 50% over 2021’s numbers. At the final stroke of the hammer, Heritage Place Sale Company reported 694 of the 790 horses offered changed hands for gross receipts of $14,768,300. Last year’s two-day sale grossed $9,822,100 on 535 head sold.
