 Sam Houston Futurity-G2
BH INXS
by John Moorehouse
Controversy surrounded the latest run- ning of the Sam Houston Futurity-G2, but when the gates opened, BH Inxs
prevailed over a reduced three-horse field to win the $731,650 event held May 28 at Sam Houston Race Park.
The field was reduced dramatically after six of the 10 futurity qualifiers tested positive for either clenbuterol or albuterol from hair samples that were taken
May 15, the week following
the futurity trials.
Based on those test results, the track announced that the futurity would be held as a non-parimutuel race, meaning no wagering would be allowed.
BH Inxs made a driving finish to secure her second career win in three starts and her first victory in stakes company in the Sam
Houston Futurity finals. The bay filly broke last from the three-gate, moved into second by the first call, and she had a head lead at the top of the stretch. In a driving finish, BH Inxs scored a 1-length victory.
BH Inxs won her May 7 Sam Houston Futurity trial to break her maiden for the fifth- best qualifying time, covering the 300 yards in :17.088. She was significantly faster in the stakes
final, finishing in :16.506 to log a 108 speed index while benefit- ing from a 10 mph tailwind.
TYKHE Racing LLC owns BH Inxs, who reaped a $334,730 payday for her connections. Juan Diaz Jr. is the trainer and Jorge Garcia did the riding.
Foaled in Oregon, BH Inxs was bred by Bill Hoburg. He also owns and trained the filly’s dam, a lightly-raced 2000 mare.
Diaz also prepped runner- up Hock It To You (Kiss My
Hocks-Lil Famous Dash), who is owned by Reynold Munoz and Heavy Hitters Racing Stables. Victor Urieta Jr. was in the irons. The gelding was second in the Oklahoma Futurity-G2 in March.
Lucky Dice (One Sweet Jess-Fodice), who placed third, is owned by J and J Stone Company Inc. Roberto Madrigal is the trainer and Manuel Gutierrez did the riding. The colt finished second in the Harrah’s Futurity-G3 in April.
The payouts for the three horses in the futurity were significant. The runner-up cashed at $188,400 while the third-place finisher received a $115,235 payday.
Apollitical Crystal, El Gansito, Dr Toola, Coronas Candy Man, Mr De Capi, Hes Tempting GI and Dealalicious were all scratched.
