Mexican Breeders Derby
EASY PERRY CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The Mexican Breeders Derby, which tradition- ally takes place in the fall at 440 yards, is now contested in the middle of spring at about 400 yards. This was one of the stakes that was can- celed in 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
The four trials were held April 11, with 35 contenders vying for the finals or consola- tion. The contestants are all three year olds born in Mexico, duly nominated in 2018
and subsequently their owners paid the participation fees in the futurity and in this derby. The fastest trial time was obtained by Juanito Y Danny in :19.314.
Two weeks later, only nine finalists returned to the stage due to DK Tiffany’s retirement from the Cuadra Tayahua. Juanito Y Danny received wide support in the betting, as did his stable mate Firedany DK.
In the first moves, Firedany DK was in tight and drifted to the right side of the track. Very close to him, from positions six and
seven, departed Dance Saqqara and Easy Perry Cartel, who from the center of the track set the dominating rhythm of the race. The bay colt finished the distance by imposing 1 1/4-lengths over the filly, who moved dangerously inward.
Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez and Easy Perry Cartel clocked in at :19.46 for the 400 yards while posting a 95 speed index.
In his trial, Easy Perry Cartel came in second to Dance Saqqara, a position that was later reversed, thus earning the colt his second victory in nine outings. His first was on Feb. 28 in the trials for the Mexican Bred Derby, in which he placed third.
Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, who
plans to return to riding this year
in Ruidoso, New Mexico, considers
that the key to this triumph was in
the starting position (#7) and also a strong and timely start. “As soon as the colt caught his way, he had no problem dominating Dance Saqqara and finished very strong at 400 yards, reflecting his quality pedigree and the good preparation he has received,” said Paul Osvaldo.
Easy Perry Cartel was bred by Mr. Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal, owner of the stallion Jesstified and the mare Tessas Decked Out (by Corona Cartel). He is owned by the Cuadra San Lorenzo and his training is carried out by the popular Alberto Fernández Pasten, who excit- edly celebrated this important achievement.
In short, he told us that he received the colt after he was acquired at the auction and, at the time, was amazed at his outstanding qualities that have only improved with training and
competition. “The colt has a proper physique to go the distance, he
is healthy and has a willingness to work.
Of course, the jockey rode excellent to qualify him and to take him
to victory in the finals. Likewise, I recognize the support and confidence of the owners,” con-
cluded Pasten, who has 18 years of experience as a trainer.
The purse for the finals was $2,155,780 pesos (approximately $107,456 U.S.), of which $905,428 (approximately $45,131 U.S.) was credited to the account of Easy Perry Cartel, bringing his earnings close to 1.5 million pesos.
Dance Saqqara (Jesstified-Saqqara), who shares 75% of the genetics of the winner and also the breeding of Mr. Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal, placed second under the guid- ance of Alejandro Gómez Díaz. The filly belongs to Cuadra A.B. and was trained by Fermín Uriarte Salas.
Bonny Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Bonny Wee Thing) was third under Aarón Adrián Gómez. Bred by Salomé Gallegos, she belongs to the
