Mexican Breeders’ Derby Consolation
DK SATO CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The race for the Mexican Breeders’ Derby Consolation was among seven of the 10 qualifiers, as Espejo Fusilero (Cuadra Cartas Blancas), Corona Hot Blazin (Cuadra Par de Reyes) and BR Tres Policy (Cuadra San Pedro PZY) did not participate. The final was con- tested at 400 yards on a fast track with a purse of $228,270 pesos (approx. $11,378 U.S.).
In the race, Miss Wave Chiks (#1) moved sharply inward and hit the rail, while the other horses continued down the race track. The sor- rel Aint Eagle (#3) broke well and took control of the group at high speed, giving the impres- sion that she would bear the distance well.
Approximately 100 yards before the finish line, she was hit, taken out of contention and pushed to fourth place. She ceded command of the race to DK Sato Cartel (#1A), Shalala Horse (#5) and SF Ranchero First (#6), who in that order crossed the finish line with little dif- ference between them. DK Sato Cartel’s time was :19.57 for a 92 speed index, improving the :19.75 of his previous start which was the third best to enter this race, in both cases under the direction of Yair Daniel Báez Soto.
The sorrel colt is bred by Cuadra La Presita and comes from Danny Cartel’s cross with
Six Royal Alibis (by Sixes Royal). He belongs
to Rancho San Pedro PZH and was saddled by Gregorio Alberto Razo Parra. His record is 2-1-0 in 5 outings. In his two-year-old season, he won the Jacinto Garduño Classic (División) on Nov.
8, 2020, ridden by Martín Utrera Morales. His earnings increased to $194,985 pesos (approx. $9,720 U.S.).
At the 2019 Select
Yearling Sale, he was listed
at $300,000 pesos ($14,856 U.S.), being acquired for his current owner’s barn. He debuted on Oct. 17, 2020, in qualifying trials for the final and consolation of the Garañones Futurity, where he came in third place but was moved to second by the disqualification of RG Benny Blood.
The filly Shalala Horse (Sea Horse Corona- Shalala B) was second under Aarón Adrián Gómez. She is owned by the Cuadra Strategos and is trained by Liderme René Gómez Díaz. Her breeder is Salomé Gallegos Fernández.
In third was SF Ranchero First (SF Royal Snow-Gotta Be Cham Pion) ridden by Martin Hernandez Bautista. The colt is the breeding
and property of Rancho Santa Fe and was saddled by Martín Uriarte Salas.
Aint Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Aint Yours) was fourth and was followed by Bliss Horse (Sea Horse Corona- Oceans Of Bliss), Flier Horse (Sea Horse Corona- Dixie Flier) and Miss Wave Chiks (Mr Chiks Perry-BP Wave Chick).
