  Hughie Windmon
This home is a representation of the style of home Big Daddy and Big Mama live in lived in when we were children. I use to love to run from one end of the porch into the porch swing on the other side. There also was a huge tree in the front yard where I made mud pies. Many fond memories were made for me in Driver, Arkansas, that I carry in my heart today.
Hughie Windmon best known as Big Daddy was born September 1, 1899. In 1917 World War I ended and big daddy would have been 17 at the time. During this time the Great Migration occurred, black southern- ers started to move north. However, Hughie only went west of the state he was born and raised. In 1920 he
moved from Mississippi to Arkansas. I have not been able to find Hughie in the 1920 U.S. Census records, since he would have been about 21 years of age around this time the chances are good he never filled out a census record be- cause he was traveling to Arkansas, and wasn’t living in a home of his own.
This is where he met and married Bettie Phillips aka Big
Mama in Golden Lake, Arkansas on December 25, 1921.
Hughie and Bettie moved from Golden Lake to Driver, Arkan-
sas just a few miles away. This is where they made a life for
themselves and they had 15 children in 25 years. Hughie work for the Lowrance brothers who owned a farming company. Back in the 1920’s Lowrance had fields of cotton is where our family earn their living. Mama and all her brothers and sisters picked cotton, I even picked cotton in them same fields once with my cousins Ted, Lisa, Doris and Joann when I went for
a visit. I have many fond memories of our grandparents when
we went to visit, I can’t say cotton picking was one of them.
During the 1970’s our parents would visit Big Daddy and Big
Mama often. I remember getting stuck in the mud on the dirt
road leading to their home, visits from the Easter Bunny, get-
ting eggs from the chicken coop, using the outhouse, taking
baths with a wash basin and adding wood or coal to stove to warm the house. There are so much I remember about our grandparents that it is hard not to share them all. Also Big Daddy was a Freemason (An international Brother-
hood one of the oldest fraternities still in existence). On the next page are some pictures describing some of the things
our ancestors and even we had experiences using during our life time.
