Tom Phillips and Sally (Gates) Phillips
Tom (Underwood) Phillips born approximately 1845, married to a Ms. Sally Gates birth or place of birth is unknown. I have been able to trace them to Mississippi at sometime in there lives because this is where their children according to the U.S. Census record indicated they were born, Andrew’s record confirms a Mississippi link. Tom and Sally Phillips were the parents of Andrew, Charlie and Ed Phillips. My focus in this book will be on Andrew Phillips because he is the father of our grandmother Bettie (Phillips) Windmon. Bettie Windmon best known as Big Mama to me, married Hughie Windmon the parents of your grandmother our mom Odessa Cook-Vincent.
Recently I was told that Tom was a runaway slave named
Tom Underwood but changed his name to avoid being taken
back to his owner. I have not been able to confirm this but
the chances are we never will, mainly because back in those times,
slaves were only refer to by their first name(s) signed to them by
their owners. The ad on the left is a Mississippi paper advertisement
for a runaway slave named Tom. So if our family story is true an
ad in the newspaper would have been publish like this one for our ancestor.
