ScHURZ Leading Newspaper Executive
   r. Scott C. Schurz had gained over
60 years of experience in the fields of advertising and journalism prior to retiring from his position as Newspaper Executive at Schurz Communications Inc. Before beginning his incredible career, Mr. Schurz pursued higher education at Denison University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. After completing his degree, Mr. Schurz embarked on his career by working as an assistant instructor at the University of Maryland. From 1958 to 1960,
he was away from his traditional workplace as he was honorably serving in the United States Army. Having completed his military service, Mr. Schurz resumed his career and worked as an administrative assistant at the South Bend Tribune from 1960 to 1966. After leaving that role, he contributed to the Imperial Valley Press and pivoted into a circulation consultant position.
As Mr. Schurz’s career progressed, so did his responsibilities; his next position would have him act as the chairman of the Indiana based newspaper, Hoosier Times Inc. Subsequently, he
became director and vice chairman of Schurz Communications. Based in Mishawaka, Indiana, Schurz Communications focuses on the technology of information sharing and making human and geographic connections and is where Mr. Schurz would later serve as chairman and publisher. Outside of his professional responsibilities, Mr. Schurz served on the board of directors for United Way of Monroe County and on the Community Foundation Area Arts Council. As a passionate supporter of the journalism community, he has been a member of several professional organizations, including the Indiana University Foundation, the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, the International Press Institute, and the Inter-American Press Association, of which he was made an honorary lifetime president. Notably, Mr. Schurz was awarded an honorary degree from Indiana University in 2000 and has traveled to over 100 countries over the course of his livelihood. He attributes his many achievements to having a valuable education and the ability to listen, and he finds being surrounded by wonderful people to be the most rewarding part of his
