Her career began as an art teacher, and then as a first-grade teacher, for the Learning Improvement Center at Allen Park School District in 1969. Afterward, she became an interior designer and owner at La Maison Magnifique, an art, remedial reading teacher and writing teacher at the Clover School District, a teacher of Gifted and Talented for the Cherokee County School District One, owner
of the Learner’s Edge, Beaufort-Jasper Career Center as the Curriculum Supervisor and Tech Prep Director, and art teacher for the Gaston County Schools.
More recently, Ms. Abell worked as an assistant principal and administrative assistant at Union County Vocational Center, an elementary school and middle school principal, and Special Advisor
to vocational education at the Wilson County School District, an assistant principal at Midwood Alternative School, Sedgefield Middle School and Starmont Elementary School, and assistant first grade teacher at Lake Wylie Elementary School. Prior to becoming an esteemed educator, Ms. Abell pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts in education from Eastern Michigan University in 1969 and a Master of Education in school administration from Winthrop University in 1982.

Ms. Abell authored “An American Tragedy Unfolding: Our Educational System” and has contributed several articles to professional
journals. She is also a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the American Vocational Association, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators,
the North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Business Education Association, and the South Carolina Network for Women in Administration.
