In the early years of his career, Mr. Wilkening achieved his commercial, instrument, and multi- engine pilot ratings and worked as a pilot in the corporate world to build up hours and experience with dreams to become a commercial pilot. He attended the University of Colorado, Boulder where he received a degree in aerospace engineering. At the time of his graduation, Vietnam pilots were coming back stateside and had higher credentials than him, so instead Mr. Wilkening pursued a career with
the U.S. Navy. Initially, he served as an aerospace
engineer but later worked as a program manager for Naval Air Systems Command between 1971 and 2002. In this role, he was influential in the management
of a multi-million dollar 10-year effort that enabled women pilots to safely fly and eject from Navy frontline fighter and attack aircrafts. For his excellence in service, Mr. Wilkening was presented with a Meritorious 30 Year Award from the U.S. Navy.
