In the early years of his career, Mr. Wilkening achieved his commercial, instrument, and multi- engine pilot ratings and worked as a pilot in the corporate world to build up hours and experience with dreams to become a commercial pilot. He attended the University of Colorado, Boulder where he received a degree in aerospace engineering. At the time of his graduation, Vietnam pilots were coming back stateside and had higher credentials than him, so instead Mr. Wilkening pursued a career with the U.S. Navy. Initially, he served as an aerospace engineer but later worked as a program manager for Naval Air Systems Command between 1971 and 2002. In this role, he was influential in the management of a multi-million dollar 10-year effort that enabled women pilots to safely fly and eject from Navy frontline fighter and attack aircrafts. For his excellence in service, Mr. Wilkening was presented with a Meritorious 30 Year Award from the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Wilkening’s education is as diverse and impressive as his career. In addition to the various pilot licenses and his engineering degree, Mr. Wilkening studied
at the Defense Systems Management College in 1994.HealsoholdsaMaster of Science in aerospace systems management from the University of Southern California (1974). Prior to that, Mr. Wilkening studied agriculture business and operations at Iowa State University (1962-63).
After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Wilkening shifted his focus to investigate the application of aerospace systems management principles to other non-aerospace systems disciplines and fields, particularly real estate. Today, he excels as the chief executive officer of Wilkening Rental Properties, LLC. He oversees the daily operations of his business that prides itself in its ability to provide high-quality affordable housing to residents in the Washington D.C. suburban Alexandria area.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Wilkening plans to continue growing assets, and increasing productivity and efficiency. The most gratifying aspect of his career has been owning and managing the real estate business he has built up today.
